Roberto Martinez discussion

Signing another CB will not help if the tactics are to leave large gaps between the CB's and play a standing off game against quality strikers. He's right, its not needed, some improved defensive tactics are what is required.

Compounding the defensive failures is what i think that both Jags and Distin lack the pace now.

With the defensive failures of Saturday one can look at the players but one needs to consider what were the plans or tactics advised to the team by the manager, that could well be a contributing factor. So some responsibility perhaps should rest on Roberto.

I was thinking last night if it was true that Roberto said they don't practice corners, if this is true i think it is bad because not only do we fail to benefit from the goals we could score from them but also we fail to benefit from the defensive training from them for our defenders, makes me feel a bit concern'd about the obvious floors in Roberto's teams defence over his managerial career

Please this is ridiculous, The majority of goals we've conceded have been due to individual errors, players failing to clear simple balls or mark their man properly. We did the exact same last season, except Distin and Jagielka had the extra step of pace that was able to catch players offside.

This is what happens when you have ZERO centre backs between the ages of 20 and 32, Jagielka and Distin feel their positions are safe, and god forbid if 1 of them gets injured.

Even ignoring the fact that we've conceded 10 goals in 3 games, considering that alcaraz has done nothing to show he's still able to play at this level, going into a campaign with 3 senior centrebacks, all of whom are at least a few years away from their primes in either direction, is insane.

More goals have been conceded from just standing off the opposition instead of going to the ball, its a regular feature of our defending... See the Ramirez chance, we get into position then nobody does anything, we try to intercept the pass or shepherd the opponent out, we simply don't go to try to get the ball.

Many times this season, pre season and last season we had a load of players back, and no one pushes on and goes for the ball.
They just stand between the ball and the goal and then hope he passes, and that its a poor pass that can be intercepted.
No one actually tries to win the ball from the opposing player and cause them to hurry.

Its like when its two on one and your the one and you try to narrow the angle of the pass whilst nullifying the danger, but they do it regardless of numbers. You could have the worlds greatest defenders in their prime and doing that, they will concede plenty of goals.

Jags and Distin are still quick enough compared to many out there, still aware enough, and are more than capable defenders.
Last season they performed heroics for long spells of the season, this season they are suffering from a poor pre season and are still getting back to speed, unfortunately we've face Arsenal and Chelsea with two of the hottest new signings in world football playing for them.

Stones is more than capable of being a replacement and whilst I am not against getting another CB, we only need a rotation option as opposed to a first teamer to relegate one to the knackers yard.

#20 Brendan Rodgers
In a look that’s part nightclub bouncer, part Nazi stormtrooper, so rarely is Brendan parted from his black collared shirt that I can only conclude he’s on a permanent diet. Yes, black is slimming, but not when it’s setting off a cranium as hulking as a velociraptor’s. It also makes his newly whitened teeth look positively luminous.

#1 Roberto Martinez
Martìnez’s fashion credentials were severely dented by his breakfast-of-champions’ choice – “chocolate spread on brown toast” rather than a probiotic, anti-ageing, moisturising, kale-based green juice – but the cut of his blue suit is too sharp to ignore. Also, this charming floral tie. Take a bow, Roberto:

You know what lads you want to have a look at what you was saying last year, here's a man who has changed the whole face of this football club and he will show it this year, wether it takes 3 games or 8 to win a game. As fans we know we are playing at a far higher level than before. It's gonna be tougher but if we would have appointed him 2 seasons before you would have been looking at a top 4 team no doubt. We are defo top 6 but if we hit a purple spot top 3. Look at our nov/dec performance last year, we are not far from that now. Sounds bold but that's what I think!

Kendall succeeded I think because he seen the club in the image in which a lot of the older supporters seen us, how we play and how we should be. Successful. Roberto has looked at our club and viewed the same thing and is trying to instill this mentality into the team. The big difference is there are few newer richer player at the poker table now.
