Roberto Martinez discussion

I think our style of play, in which players are expected to make strange, risky passes in defensive areas has contributed to our very poor start to the season. Not only does it put us under a lot of unnecessary pressure, I also think it often slows us down, and allows the opposition to regroup into their defensive positions. Clubs like Palace who want two lines of four behind the ball love our ineffective over-passing in defensive areas.
We did a lot of that last season but played well on the back of it. We are missing Barkley big time. We look very vulnerable in the middle of the park.

I think if Barkley returns we get on track again.

I think Martinez dropped the ball with that pre season, it wasn't good enough and that's definitely played its part in the start we've made.

The second half at Leicester was painful to watch and their goal was almost inevitable, he waited until 81 minutes to make a change that day, for me he should've been more proactive.

I wish people would stop parroting this twaddle about "pre season".

Did you see what Leicester did to United today?

And look at the "pre season" they had.

Same for the RS.....both those teams played well in America yet they are barely better off than we are.

They are just a bunch of pre season friendlies and have no bearing on league form.

In retrospect that draw at !eicester is looking a good enough point, albeit we should have won.

We played them off the park....Arsenal struggled to take a point there and they went through United's defence like a knife through butter in the last half hour today.

We lost today because of goalkeeping blunders, simple as.

Nowt to do with "pre season".

should have signed a back up right back, its the only area we don't have decent back up..maybe he was tho trying to tho.. been unlucky that coleman has been out for a couple of games already

We have been like this pre season and all season, looking vulnerable in every game .
Martinez has to share the blame as well. he was baffling today with his team selection, your playing an aggressive big and fast team so you throw Osman in the mix along with Atsu yes that's a big help, then sub your defence for your best two midfielders, he was desperate today.
Sharpy said before the match it wasn't the right team and he got proved right . terrible performance from are manager today.
If we play like that next week we will get spanked.

However that doesn't alter my opinion that in the summer a defender should of been signed. Whether that a RB cover or a class left sided CB. But IMO we just simply ran out of money.
how did they run out of money? HUGE money coming in this season(which is a lump sum) and the players we brought in will be paid in drips and drabs. Just because Lukaku cost 28mil doesnt mean we paid 28mil right then and there for him. You'd have to imagine there is/was more money available(tho "available" and "available for transfers" are not necessarily the same thing).

Regardless of what other teams have done I don't think our pre season was good. The whole point of it is to prepare the team for the opening game and I don't think we were ready.

It's logical to say that a poor pre season can contribute to a poor start and I think it's had an effect on us.

You didn't say it "can" contribute nor that you merely "thought" it had an effect.....you said it "definitely" played its part in our sluggish start to the season.

We are now at the end of September so even if there was any merit in blaming the lack of success in pre season friendlies to our slow start, which there isn't IMO as United and the RS clearly demonstrate following what you would regard as a "good pre season", it is no longer of any merit.

I think too many people round here, myself included, viewed Leicester as a relatively easy opening fixture hence this "pre season" nonsense was put forward as a stick to beat Bobby with in the immediate aftermath of the two points being chucked away.

When the fact is they have entertained us, Arsenal and now United and only against EFC did they look second best.

Our lack of success in pre season friendlies notwithstanding.

Their fans would say they got relegated due to their defense being decimated with injuries, no?

this thread is stupid, and so are some of our fans

They got relegated because they conceded awful amount of goals. Most were due to over playing passes at the back, individual mistakes, goalkeeper errors and simple schoolboys error. The worrying part was it continue all season long with no signs of ending. Sounds familiar?

We're playing with arguably our best back 4 and yet we're shipping in goals at the rate of wigan. Have we reach a point where we start looking for answers or just brush them aside as one off individual mistakes?

Why did our defender panic and commit individual mistakes? Are we too exposed to counter attack? Why is our defense always vulnerable? Did our midfielder do enough to release the burden of our back four? Why did we left players unmarked?

So many questions to answer, and if the players are not capable of ending this run of mistakes, then surely the management have to come out with solutions. Right now we are not witnessing any improvements.

Very well put i think even the biggest martinez fans have to admit he has lost something this season.
You get to see how good managers are when times are tough and i just hope he is strong enough because wigan went down waving the white flag

Even his subs this season have been baffling. Against Leicester he waited until, what, the 80th minute to make a change even tho most of the team were dead on their feet from exhaustion?
