but a lot of fans would certainly take a trophy over the league after so long. Personally, i'm in two minds. On one side it would save martinez skin for quite a while, even if he proved to be the wrong man in charge, but a cup and europe would be technically a succesful season to anyone.
If he wins a trophy he'll go down as a history here, especially after a 25 years + drought.
Just to clarify though, you are not sure whether you'd take a trophy over a 5th, 6th or 7th place finish??
I could understand a slight argument over maybe 4th although that's still a non starter to me but a slightly higher league placing.
Martinez's skin doesn't need saving as he's not in any danger whatsoever.

I'd argue the cup win and 5th are very similar. ok one wins us a trophy but both scenarios end up with europe which has to be the aim every year regardless. If we bomb this season and get in via the cup then great, but at the same time we need to have one eye on the future and midtable finishes with lukakus in the team is an issue, especially conceculatively.

Is it really that common? Courtois (Cech), Mignolet (Reina), Adrian (Jaaskeleinen), Butland (Begovic), Hart (Given), Robinson (Martyn), Cech (Cudicini), Handonovic (Cesar)... I don't think it's unusual for a manager to replace an ageing goalkeeper with a younger, less experienced backup when the time is right.
You'd think Howard was some Buffon or van der Sar-esque serial winner the way Martinez goes on.

You know what gets me with him though mate, BADLY, is that I really want to dig him, I do - despite everything - I/we all want it to work after all don't we...but there's decisions sometimes that baffle, set pieces, the defending, the stubbornness...the fact that at times we take 32 passes too many before there's an effort on goal....and yeah, there's good stuff too but....but, thing is...
