Roberto Martinez discussion

This place is a mess. Is this what happens when reason leaves for a little while?

We have a center defense that until this weekend consisted of a (supremely talented) 21 year old and a (surprisingly good) guy that has just made the jump from South America. Additionally, we've missed each of our starting full backs for decent chunks of the year.

That's ignoring the injury to Jamo.

Oh, and barring 1 game in 10, our starting keeper likes to throw the ball into his own net.

And yet! We're 8 points off 4th, and leading a semifinal of a cup. And we're still in the other cup.

Diabolical season.

Maybe we can wait to see how it plays out before deciding whether it's been a success? I see no reason we can't end this season with a trophy and a decent league finish.

The keeper thing remains concerning.

We were dire.. now we are better.
We are not out of anything, but up against it in everything.
We were attacking, currently we are defensive
We were underachieving, we still are
We were on a cup run, we still are.

That's the season for me so far.

Oh and by attacking.. we are actually very average at that even when playing attacking.. 10th in the chances made, 9th in the shots.. Not that attacking really to be abandoning our defense in place of it.

Well said!

I'm not arsed about the players - cogs in a wheel as far as I'm concerned.

I'm concerned with Everton winning trophies and playing good football.

If we won the LC this season playing open attacking football, what else is there other than that as a season long goal?

Any team can go from relegation fodder to CL spot challengers in this league it appears now. Why on earth would you be bothered about a mundane 7th place season if you could pick up a cup instead?
At the moment, cannot imagine where we'd be without Lukaku. We are heavily heavily dependent on him. Losing him will be a huge setback and I think he has every right to demand progress in terms of league position, cups, and player acquisitions that match the manager's statements of ambition.

Couldn't agree more and I've been wondering why it has been and continues to be so hostile and awful on this thread (and why I keep contributing...but that's another matter for my therapist): wonder whether the Martinez supporters and nay-sayers actually both share a sense of "rising expectations": a sense that this squad could do something special (something I never really thought with the limited funds and limited players that Moyes had to work with). So the nay-sayers go nuts because we're underperforming and Martinez is frittering away the last great hope of a generation; and his supporters get annoyed because they think it's obvious that there's real signs of improvement. But all this "perceived potential" (a perception both sides generally share) is translating into a lot of bitter rancor among that slice of the fanbase who still post on here. Just hope it doesn't translate into the Everton equivalent of "Rawk Meltdown." Any fans from other clubs reading this must think most of us need to give our head a wobble and get some perspective or a better sense of humor. In short, this thread is generally the worst.

Hostile?

All I see is @davek telling it like it is.

I've not seen any hostility on his part.

Incredulity yes.

Hostility no.

Incredulity at the biased shortsighted closed minded blinkered stupidity of those that would take us backward not forward to silverware.

I'm of the belief we can win things and move up the league this season.
