Roberto Martinez discussion

Yes. The cups are the priority. 11th or 5th in the PL makes no difference.

I think we'll finish between 10th and 6th this season

If we finish 8th and win the League Cup, that's an excellent season and a step in the right direction

The big thing from this season is for us to show players like Stones and Lukaku that there's reasons to stay here and that we're moving in the right direction. A cup win and top half finish is a way to show that we're making progress

Agreed.

A cup final appearance and top 8 will be a good season and show we're moving up too.

If we make that cup final, I'll be bitterly disappointed if we don't win it. Worst than I have felt for a long, long time.

It's not like big games in the latter stages of cup competitions or the cup final under previous managers were we were plucky ol' everton happy to be there. Bobby is a winner and I'd make us favourites and for the first time in 25 years, I'd expect us to win the thing.

I am very confident we will see through the job through though if we get past City which were well capable of. I think we can win next Wednesday in Manchester never mind just get a result.

I completely agree with that. Martinez does not give a flying one. He's nerveless. A cup final shoot out is something he'll relish not soil his kecks over like previous managers...no matter who the opposition would be.

City is the big hurdle. And it will be a hurdle too. They'll throw everything at this and the ref will come under massive pressure. But we can score goals. That much we know. If we score one on the night then City are faced with scoring three to go through unless they fancy penalties.

Absolutely, both of which are very much within reach, which I think is why some of us are getting impatient with current "11th isn't good enough" shouts. I'd agree if the season was over, but there's a long way to go yet.

Yep - I've found myself getting very frustrated this season. But if you take a little look back, clear the fume clouds, this could still be a decent season.

Makes yourself feel a hell of a lot better doing this too.

There is, but unless we shut the forum until May it seems pretty logical that people are going to comment on what happens up until then, wouldn't you say?

I don't think being 11th right now is good enough, so i'll say it. If we put together a good run and finish 6th i'll be very pleased, a decent run and 8th, i'll be reasonably pleased. But it still won't change my opinion that the last 18 months haven't been good enough, and if we do put together a run that gets us top 6-8, i'll still feel that we missed a trick by not picking up points when we should have done earlier in the season.

I don't want Martinez out, and i don't constantly moan and have a go after every setback, but I make no apologies for pointing out what i believe to be ongoing underperformance. Plenty of people post about their belief in a golden future, I don't whine about them doing that because i hope they're right and they might be. My opinion, though, is that we are not moving forwards, and all the demands for patience may just continue for another couple of years before we realise it isn't going anywhere. There's plenty of sides over history who thought they were going to be the next big thing only to fall by the wayside.

It'll make a difference as to whether or not we can keep our star players for another season. Sure, they might still leave if a top club comes calling with the right money, but they'll be off like a shot if we finish 11th again won't they. And finishing 11th or finishing 5th will make a big difference as to the quality of players we'll be able to attract in the summer to replace them

Interesting - odds to win the League Cup;

Liverpool 13/10
Man City 15/8
Everton 21/5
Stoke 18/1

Granted, it's a cup competition, and anything could happen. The bookies anticipate a Liverpool v City final.

But Everton are already a goal up, and could easily score another, in the semifinal. The Everton odds look generous to me.

It was a point related to the madness of thinking we're in for relegation.

We will finish somewhere between 6th and 13th. Hopefully, we'll win a cup (or two!).

Next season we need to be stronger and better. If we don't improve, my opinion will change.

This time next year Rodney, we'll be millionaires! ( or manjana, manjana in RM speak)

I hope Martinez is the answer, but not convinced yet. We need that ruthless streak to turn 90 minute leads into victories.

That's true. And how often do we let three in?

If we score one in normal time, City will have to win by 3-1 - or more - to go through in 90 minutes.

If City win by just one goal - 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 etc - there will be extra time.

If the score is still tied at the end of extra time, the game will be decided by away goals.

If away goals do not settle the game, then there will be penalties.

And the St John's teams will be busy.

Anybody needed any more proof that the nations journalists spend their time on forum's like ours, as the fume levels start to rise on here, so the nations press start running Martinez stories trying to capture the fan's mood in their own rags.
