Roberto Martinez discussion

We have more points than this time last year and were in the semi of a cup, weve scored more goals than last season, how are we going backwards?

Last season was absolutely awful mate, we had amassed less points than we had at this stage in 1994 this time last year. Having a few more points than last season, whilst occupying a position in the bottom half of the league isn't progress at all, not when compared to our regular top half finishes before Martinez came to the club.

The 1st trophey City won was the League Cup, attually winning it will be a huge move forward, changes the mentality of the entire team. Money doesn't buy you success, look at Utd they spent over 200mil and have won sod all in 3 years and don't look likely to for a few more
Money is the only thing that brings regular success hence the screams for the Sheik.

Seasons not finished yet only just half way and when we win today we are 10th

We're talking about results. Since when do we not include results from all competitions?
Well you can start including results from all competitions when we get points in the league from those cup results.
No-one is complaining about how the team has done in the cups, they've done well so far.
But surely when assessing how the team has done in the league, you take your sample measurement from the league results.
Otherwise the data is skewed and is not an accurate reflection of how we've done in that league.

If he gets us where this squad of players should be then there isn't a problem. If we continue to have the form of a bottom half side then there clearly is a problem, as almost everybody agrees that this squad of players should be performing far better than it has over the last 18 months.

I just don't think today will tell us anything much as its the type of game we should be winning. In isolation it's just another game.

I'll start to feel more confident if we put a run together but we've had absolutely no momentum in the league this season which in the absence of the Europa League and the open nature of the division is a massive missed opportunity.

I'm not limiting it to the league though. Who said that?

Including all cup game results to rate performance is like implying you're a stud cos you pulled 10 mingers last week.

Half those games were against weak opposition.
That's your definition, not that of most people.

You can subdivide a season's results by competition, but the standard is to include all competitive matches.

They're matches with resuts up for grabs. How are they irrelevant?

Because when you argue how 5th is no better than 11th you throw cup results in that have absolutely NO bearing on league placings.

And all the matches we've lost have been in the league - The ONLY indicator of a season.

It's not how you do in one-off games against random sides, it's about how you perform against your top flight peers over 38 games.

THAT is the yardstick.

Trying to use those stats with any kind of gravitas or authority when arguing about our performance in the league is silly.
They aren't a fair reflection of the situation at hand.

I agree but for people to say he taking us backwards when were half way through a season and seem convinced that we will finish 11th is mad. Plus were in a cup semi
