Roberto Martinez discussion

He has a better win record than any manager we've ever had.

He's won more than 50% of his games. Kendall and Catterick (while obviously better managers) only won 47 and 46% and Moyes only won 42.

Mike Walker, who he was compared to earlier in this thread, won only 17% of his games. Walter Smith 30%.

Judge him purely by his results rather than what he says, that's fine. He does quite well.

A guy who wins a game more often than he doesn't is a good man to have as a manager.

Mike Walker wore some really cool suits. So does Bobby.

Good performance and good result non Saturday and the season starts again.

oh my days...still buzzing...tho' my stream froze at the point it was just about to cross the line, FFS! That was truly one for the ages from Jags...maybe the most spectacular goal we've ever scored in a derby...

BUT...we were otherwise very poor. Martinez got out of jail there thanks to that Wondergoal, he seriously needs to assess what's going wrong and adapt accordingly, swallow his pride and admit that his game isn't working right now. No more Lukaku on the wing for a start: it's a novelty trick that should only be sprung once or twice a season.

And consider shaking up the McCarthy/Barry-axis as on the days it does stabilise our defence it leaves us with not enough options going forward, was a shocking move to give Barry a 3-year contract at his age anyway as when he's 35/36 he won't be offering a club with top-4 aspirations anything useful, even Ryan Giggs at Barry's age had to be content with 1-year extensions. Defence was a bit better today but as I said at the expense of an entirely-toothless offensive, which goes exactly contra to what Martinez was stating ahead of the game. More of this lark where on-pitch doesn't come close to matching the manager's vision and the players may slowly lose faith in the system.

We also urgently need a serious and strict analysis of why our corners are utterly useless. If Baines is consistently not clearing the first man, then he should be relieved of the duty. Another important thing Martinez needs to look at is the mentality of our players. We lack on-pitch leadership and spontaneous creativity, without these qualities we won't be winning any trophies.

And Tim Howard? He's been directly at fault for more than a couple of very important goals now, and it doesn't matter how many he's saved (that's his job, ffs). What can Martinez do about that? Outside of buying in a world-class keeper in January I'm not sure, but if the goalie is costing us points, it's the manager who has to fix the problem.

We can all accept Second-Season-Syndrome: a bumby top 8 with a bit of a European adventure, but the warning signs are there that it could go a whole lot worse than that. Martinez needs to be adaptable to what's going wrong otherwise there'll be some serious mask-wearing about (just imagine what the criticism would've been like had Jags not connected).

Don't like criticising Martinez but I agree with the poster above. Again today;
  • too slow makes the necessary changes. What was he waiting for to bring Eto'o on??
  • Barry looked shot. Why didn't he get subbed?
  • Hibbert should never start and replacing him with Browning was a nothing substitution.
  • We needed a creative #10 in the summer. Was Besic playing there today?
  • Why hasn't he told Baines to stop taking corners. It's a disgrace!!!
Thank god for the emergence of Stones!

Great analyses, RM needs to wake up, his mangement seems to a bit lacking at present.

As inept a performance as anything served up there in recent years, only bailed out by a freak screamer from a centre half.

We need Coleman, Barkley and Mirallas in the side as much as possible, they are the difference.

Agree with the rest of your post, mate...and agree Hibbert isn't a starter tho' he was actually ok today, just lacked pace, but it didn't essentially cost us. Browning coming on wasn't a bad move, it gave us a chance to see the lad in a hot game.

Sadly we can't afford an established creative 10, but Ross is da Boss...he can play that role.

But a point at anfield is always a good point and hopefully we use it as a springboard

Nominally agree, but Liverpool were poor and there for the taking. If we're ambitious, we would've had them.

In terms of the season so far Seamus & Kev have been largely involved. I wouldn't want us to miss Ross so much that it's seriously affecting us, as good as he can be.

Like we were last season and got battered 4-0?

RM clearly can't win

Don't get you, mate. Liverpool weren't poor last season, they were astonishingly good. But without Suarez, they've lost a good 40% of their collective ability, and with Sturridge missing today make that more than 50%.

They were poor today and there for the taking. They weren't poor in the Anfield derby last season.

With or without suarez they are dangerous on the counter attack so we played the right way against them today - stifle them and try to hit them on the break. The only issue is that mirallas was off, mcgeady'a decision making is terrible and we have no pace

Naismith scores goals and had passion so is being accommodated, with lukaku on the wing whenever we come up against a better / faster team, But honestly, could we have put on a better attacking team today? We just don't have creativity without coleman, barkley and mirallas. Lucky to get a point, but with the tactics used and players available a point was the best we could hope for. If sturridge had played an equaliser wouldn't have been an option
