Roberto Martinez discussion

I thought apart from playing Hibbert who offered us nothing going forward (Browning was the choice to make), he out manoeuvred Rodgers today. Gnashers can talk all he wants about that Liverpool performance, but it was gummy to me. Shots outside the box mostly - they barely opened us up. Martinez has to take credit for the shape he had us in. We had plenty behind the ball and when they broke down we got it forward early which had them back peddling. No quality on the ball in the final third was our weakness today. He also left Gerrard to roam free - the mode these days is to leave someone standing on him for 90 minutes. He did nothing other than rattle a free kick in and the extra man behind the ball in a solid block was often all it took to snuff them out.

If no mark Rodgers thinks they played well today he needs his head feeling. Tactically martinez got that spot on given the lack of personnel he had to play with.

Well done Senor.

Your being very sensible today, i like it

The professional moaning thread! This disappears when we win, then turns up like a bad smell when we don't! If you cant find anything but joy after that goal of a lifetime then god help you! I just don't get it. I've followed EFC since the 70's and have seen us in far worse shape than the current mess !! We were crap today and are crap! but that goal should talked about long into the night and is something to warm your children's hearts on a cold winters night when you tuck them in. Still suppose its the sky generation and all that but I find it rather sad.

Browning did well when he came on but by then we were chasing the game and pushing them back.

He sure looked good going forward and Hibbo was never that kind of a full back.

It might have been a different story if the youngster had had to face a fresh Sterling when they were in the ascendancy.

Hibbo stepped up today and had a good, solid game and was very instrumental in blunting their attacking edge.

As for Browning, I was well pleased with his showing and he looks like a possible cover for Seamus.

I am sure he will start in Russia but I would expect today's back four to be pressed into action again at OT next Sunday, if Seamus still has his "concussion" :)

Amen to that, brother.

plus we had our best 2 players missing and our most in-form player go off injured, they had sturridge missing and that's it

Sounds a bit apologist from me, but to take a point from there is a good result considering how we've fared over the years at the pit. Wasn't perfect, but we did what we needed to with a depleted team.

Sterling had a poor game because McCarthy was all over that side doubling up with Hibbert...it was hard to tell if McCarthy or Hibbert was the FB at times. Browning wouldn't have needed that much help, imo.

It wasn't our best performance obviously, but the level of organisation we showed was impressive. Those daft buggers can talk all day and night about 23 shots at goal, but I'd say Howard had to make maybe two saves of note plus they had one hit the bar. Our defending today was way superior to their attacking ability. We were poor in the final third, no question. Better quality carrying the ball and getting the right player or two forward to back up an early long ball to Lukaku and we'd have had the recipe for a smash and grab on out hands.

He made a couple of mistakes.

But at least today he appeared to have learnt from his mistake of last season going all out.

Plus it's unreal how much better our defence looks when it's Jags and Stones.

Looked majestic there today. I think that was because he was playing very deep, almost as a sweeper. If we play as deep as that as a defensive unit with plenty of cover ahead, he is very good at stepping in at the right moment to tidy up and carry the ball in transition to attack. I just dont trust him when we play our normal game of playing a higher line and split CBs.
