Roberto Martinez discussion

One thing I find funny, and it maybe from not one single poster on here but I have seen and heard ton's of people saying 'Rodgers has been found out' and 'Suarez made Rodgers last year' and of course from the RS fans 'Rodgersout' yet Martinez to those same fans can still do no wrong.

I have never been his biggest fan and my biggest worry is, he has never put together a decent defence and keeper set-up and now he is required to re-organise what he has got (and he was blessed with a great defence that was well drilled) now we have had a year with him we have one of the worst defence if not the worst statistically in the top 5 major european leagues.

We shall see how it goes but should we lose on sunday which I would consider to be likely, it will be our worst start for almost a decade with what most fans were saying that this is our best squad in the premier league era.

He organised a terrible pre-season when last year it was in place for him, a lot of people told me during those pre-season games that it didnt matter, well it did and now we are stuggling for it, 6 points from 7 league games will be a disgraceful start (should it happen).
He made a massive error keeping faith with that central defensive pairing. You can be sure when he does start spending again it'll be a CB he goes for. He also hasn't had a viable Plan B with Barkley being out. We should have been able to turn to a like for like replacement...we couldn't because no one is suited to it in the present squad (maybe Mirallas could have given it a go).

I think that's it though: a faith in players who simply cant cut it anymore and the lack of fit for purpose back up players in acm and RB in particular.

His style and attitude are still right though. He's a manager who rightly sees that this league isn't all that beyond four teams and is prepared to go for maximum points.

Well, look at how much Rodgers spent and then look at how much Martinez spent.

I see what your saying and agree that if Barkley was fir at Anfield we would have won definately as the amount of the Naismith picked the ball up in our half and had the responsibility of setting the counter and fecked it up was infuriating and barkley would have done better.

Stones should now be considered our No.1 CB and that was a great signing but who in the next year or so Matinez Buys to partner hom (assuming we can hold on to him) will be interesting, was listening to some ar Martinez defensive stats at Wigan and Swansea today and in relative terms they are terrible

Bookmarked for future vaulting.

Sound, go back to the Vaulting i recieved when I said the pre season was costing us big time, 28 mill for lukaku was too much not a waste but too much and that we would be on 5 points going into the derby. Although the cringey vaulting only comes back to the original poster when it bites as appose to a 'fair play mate'

Jesus some of you lads have short memories.

Can I remind you what he's saved us from! Of course there are going to be bumps along the way but he's got my old dad smiling consistently at the Blues for the first time since the 80s. Yes the defence has been ropey but it'll come good. Of course it will.

I agree: Martinez in the transfer market for defenders has me concerned. I know he wanted Stones whilst at Wigan, but he's got it all to do convincing us all that he'll know how to deconstruct that defence of ours and replace it with a tight unit.

If he can, he's going to be ok. If not, he'll be exiting this club in under two seasons time.

I disagree David.

We did have a plan b for Barkley, we played Naismith there, scoring goals isnt an issue, only Chelsea have scored more goals than us in the league.

He was always gonna need a few CB in the next window, Distin wont be offered a new contract and neither will Alcaatrazazaz, he thought, rightly, based on the showing last season, that we were fine in the CB spot, hes not to know that Jags and Distin would forget how to play football, its not feasible to buy players just in case players suddenly turn rubbish overnight.

Hibbert honestly hasnt been that bad, he got ripped apart at Swansea, but nodody comes out of that game with any praise.

The squad building IMO has been perfect, the players are currently letting us down badly, all over the pitch, I mean Lukaku has been utter dirge so far, but most people prefer to focus on Hibbert and the defense and ignore the fact that Lukaku has infact so far controlled a grand total of 2 passes all season.

Martinez did make a mistake in not bringing in a CB on deadline day, but it hasn't been the end of the world. Seemingly the bigger mistake was not starting the season with Stones in the side. Now he's in there we look a lot better at the back.

Everybody still seems to be in panic stations about our defence when truthfully it hasn't even been that bad since the West Brom win. Palace aside, we've been sound. Not counting Swansea as that was the second string and we clearly weren't bothered about that game.

Alot of the team are going through a rough patch plus the amount of injuries and the pre season shambles. All these things have created the perfect storm that has engulfed our start to the season.

I've got every confidence though we'll get through this rough patch and come may we'll be smiling and might have a bit of silver too.

I do think it is fair to say that when people think of Moyes they think of the worst and lowest times and when they think of Martinez they think of last season and whe that is done there is only one winner and that is Martinez, he did that with Moyes squad and his defence. last season was great and in relative terms was last season with last seasons squad better than some of moyes 'achievments'? I know when we went to for example Aston Villa away in the second game of Moyes last season no one would be calling him for being negative or Swansea away the year before when we won 3-0 as appose losing 3-0. Lets just see where we are on Christmas eve, and remember the last time we finished outside the top 10 was in 05/06 when we finished 11th

Ill bet you right now we'll be top 7 by christmas

Up to now, this season's biggest mistake was moving Stones to right back after we beat WBA and Wolfsburg. Them two wins looked like we had kick started our season. He then splits Jagielka and Stones and we get beat by Palace and Swansea. It's good to see he has learned quickly from that, moved them back alongside each other and we have earned two decent draws away. Let's hope he keep's them two together and we can get better defensively game by game.
