Roberto Martinez discussion

We have scored 46 goals in 26 games, normally a good tally. We have scored 24 of those goals in 7 games. In three of those games we scored 9 goals and got 2 points. So for 24 goals we amassed 11 league points. In 19 games we have managed 22 goals.
So tell me about managing games and defending.
When I talk about opening up teams I mean doing it on a regular basis not just once in a while.
26 games. We've scored in 19 of them.
Seems pretty regular.

Or never given him a chance because you wanted an armband wearing Portuguese fraud you hadn't heard of mere weeks earlier?

I just saw the impending horror

I make no apologies - I'm the Winston Churchill of this board (without the slightly dodgy underlying imperial leanings)

If only Bill had listened... if only...

Funny reading people saying the ones who don’t like Martinez will have wanted us to lose. Surely it’s because of the results that people don’t like Martinez. If Everton were up there and winning I personally wouldn’t care who the manager was. It says more about the thinking of the posters saying that than it does about Martinez’ detractors.

Interesting that people think he's turned it around. It's coincided with a very favourable run of fixtures, in which when the opposition have scored first we've lost. We've obviously hit a bit of form in those games bar the Swansea/WBA games, so it'll be interesting if we can take that in to March.

That on Saturday was woeful in the first half. When Dan Gosling is ghosting past people and getting chances then you know they've not quite cracked the defending thing. It was a poor Bournemouth side which we didn't really break down until the Barkley goal, despite the game being quite open and end to end.

I hope with this warm weather training they're doing, they can finally work on the defensive structure of the side, because I fear a better player than Gosling would have put us to the sword on Saturday. They need to stop giving those chances away, and if it’s a zonal thing they’re employing, I hope they change it and start tracking runners instead.

Chelsea will be a big test because so far in the cup whenever we’ve come up against a decent side we’ve lost (bar Wolfsburg).

A win is a win though, let’s hope it continues.

What an odd post.
Take out City, Arsenal, Leicester maybe... Any combination of other opponents and we would fancy our chances and thus could be considered "favourable". We've conceded one goal in recent games, coinciding with the return of 1 of our 2 "destroying" holding midfielders and a new goalkeeper.
How many games do you deem acceptable before you acknowledge that we are defending better?
You say we conceded chances on Saturday... Well we are always going to concede chances. Every team in every game concedes chances. You can't have 100% of the ball and you can't predict and nullify every attack. Course you need a bit of luck every now and then.

I am at a loss how you can be anything but positive atm.

You wanted wins. We are winning. You wanted Robles. We got Robles. You wanted us to stop conceding goals. We've stopped conceding goals. You didn't want a Pulls type disregard for the attacking output ie goals. We are still scoring goals.
If you are happy with us winning, which of course you are, why can't you just give credit where credit is due rather than nit-picking victories for supposed flaws?

So you don’t think Bournemouth, West Brom, Stoke, Newcastle and Carlisle has been a favourable run of fixtures? (That’s going back to your one goal in recent games) You think that would be equal to Spurs, rs, West Ham, Chelsea and Man Utd, and you thought my post was odd.

I’ll acknowledge we are defending better when I actually see us defend better. I’ve said it before in this very thread, as a manager he seems to like to open up the game, so it’s almost end to end, and when you do that if you have the better strikers you have a chance against the poorer sides, like we have done. As I said in my post, it’ll be interesting if Everton can take that form in to March when we play West Ham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Villa. Of which it has to be said you think only Arsenal is not a “favourable” fixture for Everton. I think after those games we may know a little more if the defending has improved because so far bar playing two wide men who actually track back, I’ve not seen much evidence of things changing.

You state a lot of things as if I wanted them, I don't need you to put words in my mouth thanks, I'm more than capable of putting forward my opinion. I’m happy Everton are winning games, of course, who wouldn’t be, but I’m not convinced it’s anything more than a favourable fixture list at present, and will remain unconvinced until I see some genuine improvement in the performances. For me the signs are still there that we haven’t really changed much defensively as a team.

Also if you don't look for improvements that can be made in performances even when you're winning and iron out the flaws you'll ultimately set yourself up for a fall.
