Roberto Martinez discussion

So you don’t think Bournemouth, West Brom, Stoke, Newcastle and Carlisle has been a favourable run of fixtures? (That’s going back to your one goal in recent games) You think that would be equal to Spurs, rs, West Ham, Chelsea and Man Utd, and you thought my post was odd.

I’ll acknowledge we are defending better when I actually see us defend better. I’ve said it before in this very thread, as a manager he seems to like to open up the game, so it’s almost end to end, and when you do that if you have the better strikers you have a chance against the poorer sides, like we have done. As I said in my post, it’ll be interesting if Everton can take that form in to March when we play West Ham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Villa. Of which it has to be said you think only Arsenal is not a “favourable” fixture for Everton. I think after those games we may know a little more if the defending has improved because so far bar playing two wide men who actually track back, I’ve not seen much evidence of things changing.

You state a lot of things as if I wanted them, I don't need you to put words in my mouth thanks, I'm more than capable of putting forward my opinion. I’m happy Everton are winning games, of course, who wouldn’t be, but I’m not convinced it’s anything more than a favourable fixture list at present, and will remain unconvinced until I see some genuine improvement in the performances. For me the signs are still there that we haven’t really changed much defensively as a team.

Also if you don't look for improvements that can be made in performances even when you're winning and iron out the flaws you'll ultimately set yourself up for a fall.

A run of Spurs, rs, West Ham, Chelsea and Man Utd? Well there is nothing about West Ham, Utd or RS that makes me feel afraid no. And the way the league is this year, and the close proximity between 5-15th in comparison to previous seasons would suggest the gap has never been so narrow between those sides. So whilst traditionally Utd and Chelsea have been difficult games, are they any more? Nah. Spurs? Good side and we've played them twice this year already. No losses. If anything I actually fear the WBA and Stoke's more because they come to Goodison with effective game plans and have beaten us.

The 'you' in m previous post was the collective Anti-Martinez mob, which includes yourself. I wasn't attributing every point specifically to you.

You'll remain unconvinced until you see some genuine improvement in the performances?! You're a lost cause if you can't see that has already happened.

to a degree, i agree with your post, it has been a favourable run of games and we have been winning them. This is essentially what we have lacked this season, having these games and getting the results and/or the performance to go with them. Without checking the table, if we had took maximum points from the last run of these games, bournemouth/norwich/leiscter/palace, we would be on the coat tails of a title challenge which would have amrked martinez as the manager some people defend him to be. Instead we are where we are relying on beating a lot of teams above us to close that gap to at least get to europe.

Im as martinez critic as anyone and won't shy away from that. In the last few weeks in this favourable run he has certainly altered things to good effect, another example of him possibly developing as a manager. The first 11 who are getting the results, your lennons and cleverleys keeping their place is a major plus point for me, and the results have reflected that. They aren't our strongest 11 by any means, but the manager noticing a difference in results and rewarding the team for that is a massive thing in my eyes. Moyes for example would never have done that to change results.

I’ve said it before, the ‘Martinez in’ mob if we’re going down that route, say a lot, accuse people, throw out stats to suit and go round and round with the amount of corners they turn.

But I’ve yet to see one of them actually talk about football and what happens on the pitch.

As I said in my previous post, to be ultimately successful you need to work on your weaknesses even when you’re winning, and at present it seems more a favourable fixture list than anything else.

Chelsea will be a big test because so far in the cup whenever we’ve come up against a decent side we’ve lost (bar Wolfsburg).

A win is a win though, let’s hope it continues.

We played Manchester City three times last month, winning the home leg 2-1, drawing away in the league 0-0, and losing the away leg away 3-1 - and losing the semifinal on aggregate only to an outrageous refereeing error.

There will be testing games ahead in March - including West Ham, Chelsea and Arsenal - but we look in good form to take these teams on.

I know it sounds strange given our recent form at home, but the good thing is is that all those teams are gonna come to Goodison to play... well, here's hoping they do anyway, because if so I think with the defence looking pretty solid atm we can more than match them going forward.

Irrelevant as of yet though as we've got Villa to get through first!

We've played 34 games so far this season in all comps, we've only failed to score in 6 of those games. Our goals for tally is nicely boosted by a the recent 3-0 wins and the battering of Villa and Sunderland, but our issue this season has been conceding too many, not struggling to score.

Unless it is a product of the way we need to play to score goals, is that what is causing us to concede so many. It is hard to imagine that is the problem when we always seem to play with two holding midfielders. It is a mystery how we seem to be so porous at the back given the quality of defenders we have and the fact that McCarthy and Barry sit so much. Could it be that we have too many bodies and no one is taking responsibility because they are passing the forward on to someone else.

26 games. We've scored in 19 of them.
Seems pretty regular.

I accept that the goal scoring is going OK, we do seem to have scored a lot in a relatively small number for games. But as you say we have scored in 19 games, we need to find a way of winning 1-0.
Hopefully it is a matter of tweaking the team to tighten up in a way which won't stop us scoring. We'll see over the next few months.
7 league wins, 3 draws and 2 losses and get past Chelsea and I will be a happy bunny. However 4 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses and Chelsea knocking us out of the cup then surely we have to take a long hard look at the current state of the club and what we need to do to progress.
We need a marked improvement in results to climb up the league and get a respectable finish.

I'd rather win 3-0 than 1-0 like but I get the point. Turning draws into wins is a must and it's that - more than the 7 losses - that has cost us this season.

Hope David is ok after that kicking he just got in his "Cup thread".

Never like to see a brother Cultist take a kicking like that.

@bizzaro show yourself, @davek needs you right now.

His final post in that thread was incredible though. Having taken all the punches, he stood up and whacked right back like peak Ali. Even if the points went against him, he had the final, most memorable say.

The internet hasn't seen a man of this calibre before.
