Roberto Martinez discussion

Injuries have absolutely dry bummed us and stopped us getting any kind of momentum and cohesion this season. It's been a pretty turd season so far apart from the EL with a couple of quality performances. I think that's a major positive of today is that no hamstring snapped or ligament damage as seems to be the case every bloody game. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that!

No excuses today mate we had 3 wide men sat on the bench.

I think having half a team out injured most of the season is going to have an impact mate. I'm not saying today's team wasn't good enough to win today because on paper it was. In reality though Baines, Barry weren't fit enough, Coleman isn't back up to speed yet, Barkley is still trying to find his rhythm, Mirallas has played more minutes than we could have wished for the past 8 days. There's just 5 players mentioned and as I said it will have an effect on team cohesion. Players who normally need only 1 touch end up taking 2 or 3. Add to that players reverting to type like Howard making a mistake again and it all adds up to being consistently inconsistent so I'm not at all surprised by how we are doing. Doesn't mean I'm not frustrated but I don't think we have a divine right to smash every team we play either. Spurs away is always tough, always has been and we've been poor away all season performance wise so I'm not shocked we got beat.

And can we get players back to full fitness before we put them straight back into the team please? He should have learned that lesson from Anfield last season.

Baines and Barry didn't look at it at all today.
I'm glad someone noticed that todays team selection/ performance was like anfield last year. what's wrong with going away from home and being hard to beat rather than we are going to attack you all day long.

A telling point in the first half: Coleman with a Spurs defender in front of him and another one within striking distance of him if he tried to take him on - Coleman waving the Everton player on the ball away and not fancying it. You just cant expect to do that without a teammate drawing the opposition away. Coleman second half with McGeady ahead was back in the game and further up the pitch. That was no coincidence.

In that instance all Coleman had to do was make space himself to receive the ball. It is about pass and move and at times today, we were too static as well as too many players wanting too many touches. There is one thing about Naismith and Ossie they will move into space to receive the ball. Sometimes their problem is, controlling the ball and/or getting caught in possession or losing it.

We were too disjointed today with too many under par performances. We don't have the biggest squad and sometimes needs must.

Being played out of position the entire time sure isnt helping him. And, shocker here, he looked heaps better when moved behind Lukaku. Probably MOTM for us today tho that doesnt say very much because everyone else was just utter wank.

Aye mate I think he needs to be played behind the striker or nowhere at all at this moment in time. I was just getting at the fact that him missing the start of the season wasn't ideal for us and was basically the start of us picking up a lot of injuries to key men

Fair enough, but the mistakes/miscues Martinez has made this season is troubling, to say the least. Its like he took literally everything that worked last season and thought '.....nah, lets try something different'. We play with two ridiculously boss fullbacks and, at best, have only one of them doing anything because he doesnt want to play with players who are ACTUALLY wingers.

I'm certainly not saying Martinez is blameless as he picks the side mate and is paid to get the results and he hasn't been able to find the right balance consistently this season. I apportion part of that due to injuries bit not all of it. He absolutely ballsed up pre season for whatever reason there was piss poor planning which had a negative effect on the whole squad let alone anyone who was in the world cup.

just shows how little you understand football

No it doesn't.

First choice back 4. Barry back in midfield. Besic alongside him. No Naismith so Eto'o and Lukaku up front, after being so effective against Wolfsburg. Mirallas in midfield too.

The only thing that didn't work - and doesn't work - is Ross Barkley on the right wing.

He probably should have started with Pienaar on the left and Mirallas on the right and had Ross on the bench.

Overall I was optimistic before the game - basically because I don't think McGeady is good enough to start, and Osman is better as an impact sub.
