Yet West Ham/Lille/Wolsfurg/Arsenal/Liverpool/West Brom/Villa and Swansea all failed to beat us

Defo been found out
the question was why have we not hit the heights of last year, Our quality is still going to win us football matches. But do you think teams are not doing there homework against us. you can pick teams that we have got good results from because we are a very good team.

Why have Liverpool, Arsenal, Utd and Spurs all struggled?

Have they all been found out?

The league this year is all over the place, We are only 5 points of 4th which is mad considering some of our results

Injuries have ruined us imo, Stones being a massive massive miss, Think how sold we looked with him and Jags at CB, Now we have a half fit Barry and an injured McCarthy to deal with

When you put it like that it shows how hard it is to make the CL through league placings.

Ergo I agree with those who say winning the EL is a better possibility of making it to the CL for us than doing so by claiming one of the two CL spots available when der oil clubs are taken out the equation.
Completely agree and it is even more stark when you break it down into games you need to win.

Around 70 pts is usually what you need for 4th place whose reward is a playoff match to get into the CL group stage. We need approx 53 points over the rest of the season which is 17 wins plus 2 draws.

Whereas to win the Europa, which not only gets us long overdue silverware but also entry straight into the CL group stage, we'd need to draw the away leg then win the home leg of 4 matchups and then win the final. So effectively only 4 draws and 5 wins and not even that as you can lose a few of the away matches if you make it up by winning big at home.

The opposition is tougher than the league, especially as you face the CL dropouts, but in a way that suits us as we can play more to the counterattack away like we did against Wolfsburg and smaller teams often have better results in cup competitions as random elements such as referee decisions have more impact.

Mate , your jumping on my answer to a question that you probably didn't read. The poster asked why are we not as good as last year ,of course injuries are the biggest issue in this but if you think teams have not noticed how everton tore people up last year and set about stopping us your insane. If you want to list teams speak to me about palace at home, the perfect way to play against everton.

I think we can win the Europa League.

I don't think we have the consistency or squad depth to finish fourth after our indifferent start and bad luck with injuries

I would happily finish midtable if we won the Europa seeing as last time we won a cup I was seven years old!

I've said it for the past few weeks: he's thrown the kitchen sink at demanding strong European performances to the detriment of the next PL game up. He defo wants to beef up his managerial profile. No question in my mind. We all want Everton to do well in Europe, and qualifying for the KO stage is a target we had to hit. But where I'd part company with him is that once we had this group under control he didn't take his foot off the gas a bit and manage the last couple of games. He's over-pressed in these midweek games and we've paid the price with some half paced performances.

That's the one thing about Roberto I cant abide: his eye for the next step in Project Martinez. He's very quick to take up the media work and he very definitely is looking to use the EL as a platform for himself.

you don´t half let your imagination run away with itself....

unless you have some kind of mind reading abilities allowing you insight enough to declare so confidently what Bobby is thinking.

Silly stuff IMO

I was 15! God I feel old and it's long overdue let the hood times commence I hope

Teams are learning how to stop us ( doubling up on our full backs and pressing high ) and keeping lukaku back to goal. We need to adapt

I think this has a lot to do with it. We need to be able to adapt when necessary not just pass the ball round our own half when down a goal or two.. Barca can do it cause they have the players to move into position and a player who can make a killer pass. We don't yet. It doesn't answer the horrific mistakes and decisions we have made on the defensive side of our game. It started at the Leicester game when we were 2 up and our full backs and wide midfielders not getting out to block down crosses. Standing 5- 10 feet off our opponents allowing crosses (with our sometimes suspect central defenders) is like playing Russian roulette. And we always hit the chamber with the 9mm.This simple skill along with others are the basis of a good goal against figure and ours is very poor.

Roberto is not a top manager yet. He makes some stupid decisions like other young managers. (How he left James Mc Carty on the last night after spending 10 minutes holding his hamstring and then wonders aloud how it got so damaged beggers belief). However I do believe he is going in the right direction or at least trying to so will be prepared to give him a couple seasons.

I still prefer watching us now than when Moyes was in charge. But we need up the speed of our attacking play now and again and cut out mistakes.

yep, it's still a great time to be an evertonian, The European campaign will give us a huge respect amongst fans and clubs in the euro zone.

Celtic/Fulham/Rangers/Braga and Boro have all reached the final within the last 8 years lad, We have a very good chance of going far
That's a fair enough point. You can progress. Although none of those teams went on to win it. In the domestic cups in the same period, on the other hand, there's been 6 different winners outside of Liverpool, United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. And as pointed out by deipnosopist above, the CL spot will make competition fierce this season.

Hasn't Baines already got more goals and assists than he did last year? Coleman has played pretty well as well.

We havent played that badly this year, personally i think this year's performances at Old Trafford and WHL were better than last year's, just been unlucky with the results (I know we lost both years to Spurs).

Awful lot of sideways & backwards passing going on though. Allows the opposition to get themselves set and to press which makes our backs all nervous. Where the tempo gone?

To be fair, it's a double edged sword. Those passes and possession build up confidence and rhythm, and sometimes you need to do it until something becomes open further up the pitch. I agree, it can be ****ing tedious to watch at times, but all told we profit from it.

I'm not prioritising one competition over the other. The EL and the other cups we need to go for. We're desperate for silverware. No one ridicules the 7th place trophy stuff more than me. But I'm looking at the league performances, more than climbing places in the table, and dosing your effort becomes key. Martinez knew by at least at HT at Wolfsburg that we'd qualify, given the result coming in at FT in the other game in the group (in fact, with Krasnodar to come at home in the final match and with Wolfsburg and Lille facing each other the qualification was pretty much guaranteed after the Lille game). There should have been some recognition of that in terms of the levels of effort we put in coming into the Wolfsburg game. The level of effort in Germany was enormous. It's little wonder the team (especially the defence) suffered a reaction. And allowing McCarthy to even start that game, never mind keep him on the pitch when he'd already collapsed to the ground, was costly.

I have no second thoughts on saying Martinez is prioritising Europe. To my mind it's patently obvious. He's an ambitious feller and knows that showing he has what it takes to strategise against very good competition is a big plus for him.

Good response and I have to agree with you there.

so now I am saying that baines and coleman are not playing well. what is going on with this board. If your going to cut into a debate go back to the begining and find out what it's about. a poster asked why are we not playing as well as last season, nobody is saying we are playing badly. Especially not our fullbacks, but if you can explain any other reason that aaron lennon was almost playing as a defender yesterday perhaps you can tell us.
