Roberto Martinez discussion

Yes, he was that great.

He wasn't consistent nor did he play all that often for us....but by Jove when he was on a going day he was the amalgam of the player every one of us ever dreamed of having at our club.

The way he ran at the RS when he came on as sub....the dart into the Old Trafford penalty box which instigated the move for Oviedo's goal...the sparkling display and superb goal against Stoke....and of course the highlight of his time with EFC, the sublimity of the goal at Arsenal.

Alas, it was all over for Gerald and Everton by the middle of December as he never shone so brightly after his injury, but he did make a very telling contribution for Ross's wonder goal at the Barcodes. He won the ball on the edge of our box to send Wavertree's finest on his way.

He lit up that golden period we had around this time last year, when between the Goodison derby and Ossie's back pass on Boxing Day we were playing the best football in the country.

I think one of the reasons we are all so down at the moment despite the team not doing all that badly in the league and Europe having proven to be a happy hunting ground thus far is that we know what might have been if he was still around.

And FWIW there is no doubt in my mind we would have gone on to claim a CL spot last season happen Gerald hadn't sustained that injury against Fulham.

Tbf I had completely forgotten about how much of a torrid time he gave the RS in the derby, ignoring the fact he missed a couple of big chances he was absolutely tearing them a new one. Still trying to erase the final score of that game out of my memory is probably the reason for the forgetfulness!

If nad a big IF he achieves his potential then Gerard will be one of the most exciting players in the world without a doubt. It is how he develops from here on in that is how he will develop as a footballer.

I thought it was a waste loaning him in, still do actually. Would i sign him permanently? in a heart beat. What is the point in having said 17 year old on loan to do those sparks of magic when id rather have him for years and making those sparks turn into greatness.

I would like us to try and sign him in the summer if Barcelona made him available.
He would fit ideally into Martinez's long term strategy being a similar age to Lukaku, Stones, Besic, McCarthy etc and having bags of potential.
Whether a deal could be agreed is another matter.
I would be happy with Peresic, just a top quality winger is badly needed.

It is hard enough to tell whether an established player can make the switch from another league to this one (eg Soldado) let alone a youngster. Atsu has far more experience that Geri and has already done well in two different leagues yet appears to be struggling to adapt anywhere as near as well as Deulofeu.

Deulofeu was, and probably still is, either out of our price range or at the very top of it. It would have been a huge gamble with money we don't really have to buy him without knowing how he'd perform.

Cl through the league is gone now, you'd be deluded to think overwise.

Let's go balls out for Europa and see where it takes us.

It'll probably take us to the point where we meet a better team who knock us out.

We've got to take the cup competitions seriously, that should be a prerequisite for this club. The league form will improve, it has to. Just a shame this start has made it almost certain we won't be in the mix for the Champions League places.
