Roberto Martinez discussion

I do get annoyed that Barry McCarthy axis of awesome is never broken up when we are losing.

A minor gripe but a gripe none the less.

I agree, don't think we need both when chasing a game, although I think Martinez might see it that playing both enables one (normally Barry) to drop into a back 3, enabling Baines and Coleman to both bomb forward. Taking off either player could therefore be detrimental to our attacking threat.

Would love to see us add someone like Dusan Tadic. Could you imagine him, Barkley and Mirallas as our 3 attacking midfielders interchanging and terrorising defences?

Like bossmen.

We do need both when chasing a game. They gain possession and allow the game to continue. If we played only one of them, we would concede a lot more and have a lot less possession. Having more attackers on does not make you a more attacking team

Don't see why they couldn't go forwards anyway with one DM..

Goodness sake...

I think it's pointless for me to talk about the effect we as the team have at Goodison Park.

The effect comes from YOUR presence, YOUR voice and YOUR support.

With Season Tickets for the 2014/15 campaign now on sale, we have the opportunity to get ready and get prepared.

Remember, everything we do is to please you and make you proud of your football club.

Please take this opportunity and make sure you are a part of an exciting, exciting season ahead.

Sólo lo mejor.

We're barely going down the left at all these days

You'd think Martinez would want to mix it up a bit?

It's happened a bit more in recent games, or periods of recent games at least. Considering it was the only side of the pitch we played on for two years you could say he's mixing it up.

I like the new style but I don't think we are that much better than previous in terms of overall threat.
We've got less attacking options with two defensive midfielders and a nulified Baines threat, give the opposition more time to get from attack to defense, and seem defensively more reliant on luck for clean sheets.

That being said we are better to watch and dominate possession like never before, and the freedom to shoot long or charge into the area has earnt us a lot of points this season, in fact its probably our main source of goals.. i.e solo runs or long shots, and formationa dn passine wise, we seem to be heading towards something very good, but I don't think we are much superior to last season...yet.. and I suspect we will finish in a very Moyes'esque league position.

On your comment on our defense I dont think its worse or better really. We have been reliant on luck in defence for a couple of years. I felt in Moyes last two seasons that our decent defensive stats were not reflected in what I actually watched in each game - i.e: generally being solid but then suddenly handing up opportunities on a plate to the opposition who seemed to miss more than they scored.

Barkley should be dropped deeper and Barry taken off for an attacking player when we're chasing the game IMO.

I think we need him deeper as a starter, tbh. It's surely his game? Ideally, Barry and McCarthy would be competing for the slot alongside him, and we get a playmaker in to take up Barkley's ACM role as he now plays.

Those players (ACMs) can cost, but it'd open up a world of possiblities for us as a team.

Really? Thought we were pretty solid under Moyes defensively.
Seems a lot easier to get central on us in our box imo.

He's better without CM responsibilities, but he seems to have stopped picking the ball up from deep and driving with it at defences. That's where his real talent lies. Teams have either figured us out and sit deep or the lad has lost a little confidence since his injury and/or when Delph pinched the ball off of him.

Sentiment to his ability though isn't it? first year in the prem and teams are having to get him out of the game.

Can't wait to see him next year

He is going to be some player, but he needs backing up from the rest of the team so we have threats all over the pitch and he can't be marked out of a game. I don't think we've had a game this season where everyone has been on song.

ACM... I can only assume you play footy manager?

But yeeah mostly in agreement. I'd say Barkley is box to box but can fit into the attacking mid role well as he's good at running at defenders. But seriously, I think Barkley can be the playmaker, just not from up top. Look at every game in which he's been dropped deeper (Goodison derby and Saints spring to mind), he's put some good balls though to Lukaku which is something we desperately need to see more of.

So yeeah, I hope we get to see more of a Barkley-McCarthy midfield.
