Roberto Martinez discussion

This has nothing to do with the board.

The Manager stated numerous times in the press that he had a vast sum of money available to spend.

And he chose to wait until the summer until the right person became available to spend that money, rather than spending it now and regretting it later.

Short term planning and panic spending seldom produces sustainable results my friend.

We wont have a big net spend. In fact, I'd say we may have no net spend at all once the window shuts in the summer. They'll claw back any spending by sales. The club is geared to player sales as part of its model of operating now. That isn't going to change. It wont matter how much extra revenue comes in via the tv deal. ...and it'll be accepted again with a few grumbles, despite all the 'it's their last chance' talk right now.
I agree that it's very much been the model of operating. However it's impossible to ignore that the TV deal has changed in such a massive way that it'll take our operating profit from negligible in the last set of accounts to about +£40m in the next set. That's a LOT of money to try to lose down the back of the sofa. And while I agree that this board are experts at that, I don't believe even they can account for not spending that quantity of new income.

I thought that performance was very Moyes-esque today tbh. Quality in the final third really is costing us.

I'm also worried that old habits are dying hard with regards to these 'big' matches away from home.
In the sense we competed very well snapping into every second ball. But could you see a Moyes team retaining the ball in the way that Martinez has these doing now? Not for me. We'd have stopped any attempt to play with 20 minutes to go and tried to hang on with three defensive subs. That's not Roberto's way. Thank God!

Panic spending?

The windows open a month mate.

Wheres the panic?

He sold 2 freaking strikers this Season alone.

We are happy Dave, nobodys saying get this Catalan Clown out, we can see the progress, the syle of play, the will to win every game, we see all this, but also see, for the another Season on the run, a Manager who sat on his hands and threw away a chance to take the Club to another level.

Sat on his hands and threw it away? He made 3 attacking substitutions today. It just didn't work out. Jagielka/Distin should be clearing that ball when it glides past them for the goal. We dominated but just couldn't find a winner. Mirallas wasn't that good today and Barkley needs to be rested until fully fit. But you can't say Martinez "sat on his hands and threw it away".

People also seem to forget it's his first season. When was the last time we could say we've dominated United, Arsenal and Chelsea all away from home? Plenty of positives to take from today's defeat. If we maintain that performance going to Arsenal, and have a fit again Lukaku, we've got a great chance

We'll see. Hopefully you're right. But if there is no big spending maybe it can also nudge a lot more people to a point where enough really is enough.

Fair enough, you've got a point there. I do think it was a similar pattern to most games we've had at Stamford Bridge though, albeit we did have more of the ball. Not that it concerned Chelsea.

United are awful this year. An under 5s disabled girls team made up entirely of midgets could dominate them away from home. We honestly need to stop bringing them into this conversation.
