Roberto Martinez discussion

We have been to OT, Stamford Bridge and the Emirates; gone toe-to-toe and been the better team.

Never mind the recent run of reversals, that is progress. It's great to have a manager again who just wont accept cowering away at those places.

BUT, out of all the games away from home against teams around us we've still only managed one win. I don't even think it's the mentality, it's purely down to not having the players to hurt the big teams.

Is true sadly. Apparently Utd are rubbish now, but if you include the Rooney contract, Moyes has spent about £135m so far.

Spot on, only once this season have we totally rolled over, fantastic really, Today and at Spurs don't tell the full story, we didn't deserve to lose either. Today hurts because we have been doing so well and have knew expectation, pre Martinez the defeat would be a given

I'm laughing at the comments saying 'yeah, we might have dominated Chelsea...but we're a possession team that's bound to dominate Chelsea' !!!

Like it's always been thus and that sitting in the halfs of top three teams bossing them all over their place is no big deal.

Incredible.

We lost though.

We lost though.

Of course we did. But it was a matter of a free kick deep into injury time.

If you're looking at that game today and not drawing the obvious conclusion that something is very definitely RIGHT at Everton then I dont really know what to suggest to you.

I'm not saying its no big deal. Arsenal are a possession team so its hard to do that but if you're a possession team you shoudn't rave about going to Chelsea and outplaying them. Its something you should get used too.

You can marvel at the possession stats if you want to, but we didn't create enough chances and lost in the end.

He needs time to bring in his own players, Players who can move the ball around quickly and split a defence and obviously he needs a top quality striker, Something that has eluded us for a very very long time

He's using a team that is 90% Moyes and attempting to change the philosophy of a football team he drilled and built over an eleven year period

The signs are there for everyone to see after only 10 months, We go into every single game with one intention, Keep the ball/dominate possession and for the most part it has worked

Having only one striker in Lukaku has ruined this season, He was never rested and once he took the knock we were in deep trouble, This summer that has to be addressed quickly, If he does we could be in for a great season

I thought so too. But that is part of the progress isn't it?

In fact I thought Chelsea would be potent on the break and in the final third but Everton were never letting them get going today and snuffed out everything they tried.

Watch Mourinho's interview on the BBC. He begrudges accepting another team has got the better of his teams and he pretty much concedes it happened today.

I've just watched the interview. That's one of the more serious and interesting post match interviews I've seen him do. Looked knackered after a 90min tactical battle with Martinez, talked about the tactics and what made it difficult for them. Interesting stuff. Mourinho looked relieved at the 3pts.

We're a possession team doing that to a level that controls games against elite clubs...and after Martinez has had roughly 8 months to stamp these players with this brand of football.

You're very sanguine about that achievement, I must say. Maybe you'd like the PL title next season and the European Cup the year after to keep the momentum up?

The expectation levels amongst some given Martinez's short period of his time in charge are bizarre.

I'm with Davek here. I'm pleased with most of our game atm. We are sound enough at the back with brilliant attacking full-backs and we have a superb midfield that can go toe to toe with anyone and out-pass/out-battle them.

The last element we need and are missing atm is that link between our creative players and the striker. We were missing it before Lukaku got injured and have missed it with other players who have replaced him recently. We've often got by on spectacular goals from midfielders or the full-backs this year (Swansea, Norwich and Villa spring to mind).

I'm not sure, personally, what needs doing, whether it's a change in personnel up top or just perseverance with the current system to make things click, or players (e.g. Mirallas/Barkley) to return to form.

It'll be hard to sort this out if RM thinks we need new players, as top attackers don't come cheap. Fortunately for teams like the RS and Brendan Rodgers, they were already blessed with a world class player like Suarez when BR took over and on top of that, were able to spend £12m on a striker last January to complete their strike force. Having £12m before player sales and spending £22m on a single player are the kind of things we can only dream of, so unfortunately for RM, he's got a bit of a task on his hands.

However, if he was to get a top class attack on the same wavelength as the rest of our team, I've no doubt we would be a top 4 side. Looking at our performances away at the top 4 this year (bar the anomaly at Anfield) we've been more than a match for all of them.

Defo mate. He was second best there today, no question. And he knew it. His analysis - when you stripped it down to bare bones - was that Chelsea were basically not able to get a foothold until late on in the game and the reason it was still in the balance by then was because we have no goalscoring threat at the moment.

I was expecting some arse covering by Mourinho, but fair dos,he conceded the ground over dominance.
