He's not ITK or anything, but he does this sorta thing all the time.

Whenever a employer wants to employ someone who's still deliberating whether they want the job or not, they make it publicly known that the offer is currently being made toward another candidate.

If it works then the wanted party usually makes a move and the ball is back in the court of the employer (or in this case, Everton FC)

He also went on and pointed out that we've done it before. (Mike Walker)

Don't think GOT would have been going when Moyes first joined us. If it had I'm sure a lot of the comments about his appointment would have been negative - inexperienced, never managed at the top level, couldn't get promoted with Preston etc - and probably ****ging the board for lack of ambition. Any choice is a risk. My preference would be Vitor, but have only really paid any attention to him over the past few weeks. Matinez could be an inspired choice or a complete flop. Just hope Bill knows what he is doing on this one as he obviously did with Moyes.

From what I can remember, pretty much everybody wanted Moyes as the club needed a drastic fresh start and he was cut from the cloth to do it....and he did. The situation now is different. We need someone who take things to the next level, someone who has the mentality to stop players bottling it on big occasions, someone with european experience and who knows what it takes to win. I don't think Martinez is that man - he plays attractive losing football. Further, if Stoke had beaten City in the cup final a few years ago, do you think there would have been clamber for Pulis to manage a top 6 side? Nope. Martinez was turned down by Liverpool....if he wasn't goof enough for them, then he isn't good enough for us.

We can all speculate what BK is thinking but seems to be alot of people including Blue Kipper, EFC peoples group etc who have jumped the gun, desperate for an outcome, creating those odds in the process.

Yeh logic dictates this could be correct, if we're thinking that the board is really this clever as they did the same with Andy Gray back in the day.

I also like the theory that the badge was a cooly calculated move so that next year when the classic design comes back it will fly off the shelves and have record sales. Much like Coca Cola did with "New Coke" back in the day.

Thanks for that, I'm going to go ahead and copy paste it in here to stop that proboard from collapsing.

Bill Kenwright has told Sky Sports News there is no front-runner for the Everton manager's job as he prepares to meet Roberto Martinez.

Martinez has been given permission to leave Wigan this summer and is due to discuss the possibility of succeeding David Moyes at Goodison Park.

Sky Bet make him an odds-on favourite for the post, but Everton chairman Kenwright insists the Spaniard's name is just one on a list of candidates drawn up with the help of the club's supporters.

He said: "I will meet Roberto in the next 48 hours and he's on the list, as I've always said. No more than on the list.

"I said we'd be making a list, and Evertonians have been great as I indicated I thought they would be.

"They've certainly bombarded me with their thoughts and they're not a million miles away from mine.

"You always get the odd one that thinks he's got the only idea, and there are a few plumbers and electricians who think they can manage Everton, but in the main Evertonians and myself are sort of on the same page.

"The most gratifying thing is 90% of them said 'you didn't let us down last time, go with your gut instinct and hopefully you'll get it right again'.

"There's no way I or anyone can say 'we'll get the right man' but I certainly will put everything into getting it right and getting the right DNA for Everton Football Club. That's very important."

Pressed on whether Neil Lennon, Malky Mackay or Michael Laudrup were potential targets, Kenwright said: "There is a list. No favourite - not at this moment."

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan confirmed Martinez had decided to leave the DW Stadium after a meeting with the Spaniard on Tuesday, but insisted there would be a price to pay.

Whelan said: "He's still on a contract with us and there's 12 months left on that contract. He can be released from that contract but there'll be a little bit of compensation to pay for whichever club wants him.

"The amount is somewhere around £2m. To get a manager like Roberto, I think it's very cheap."

Is it me or are all the Martinez backers conveniently saying he's not their first choice, some sort of get out of jail free card for when he plummets us down the league maybe .........

Martinez held a high line against Arsenal ffs... Walcott absolutely shredded them.
Moyes went a bit more attacking this year and it didn't really work but he generally has us with an excellent defence and plenty of goals as well. Our GD is normally pretty decent which may just be personnel, may be down to tactics, may be both.
Guess we are going to find out soon regardless of who it is :)

Wigan HAD to win that game, he had to commit players forward. I wouldn’t say Walcott shredded them either. Wigan were the better side until Mcmanaman went off injured. The goals were largely individual errors in that particular game.

Wigan played at Goodison twice last season and were arguably the better side on both occasions.

I’m not advocating Martinez, Laudrup has been my first choice throughout. But I think it’s unfair to judge him based on selected games with inferior players. I think that EB article actually has quotes from Roberto saying that he’s adapted his style to suit the players at his previous clubs, which I think we both agree is the best approach. People constantly give out this 29% win percentage, which is purely his Wigan one when it’s much higher if you include his Swansea days. A counter may be that Swansea were in a different league etc. so does that mean Vitor’s is 0%? Not saying you, but Vitor seems to be first choice with a lot on these boards and hardly anyone knows anything about him. I’ve spoken to 3 Portuguese people (all Sporting fans) and they don’t really rate him. They say as long as he beats Benfica they’ll win the league and he’s been quite lucky in achieving that so far. The real test for managers at Porto is Europe and he’s failed there.

Has our GD really been that good under Moyes. Maybe I need to go back and check the stats, I always think of us as a marginal side, who tend to finish with a low GD for our placing, due to 1 goal swings in most of the games.

As you say we’ll find out soon enough. I’m just looking forward to a different approach. For all the faults and people picking it apart, I actually like the positive approach to life that Martinez brings as opposed to the negative attitude that Moyes would often give off. If you were a player at Everton would you welcome the new manager coming in who favours positivity and attacking football. Who doesn’t hang his strikers out to dry but instead will try to find the positives in your performance, or would you want the manager who had his best attacking player back defending in his own area for large parts of the game? You could argue the same for the defenders, ‘Jags, hit the front man!’ or ‘Jags, pass and move!’ as a footballer I know which approach I’d prefer.

FFS can we jsut hurry up and sign Martinez. The man quit his job after winning the tin pot. He clearly is a blue. BK needs to pull his finger up and sign Martinez up
