Wigan HAD to win that game, he had to commit players forward. I wouldn’t say Walcott shredded them either. Wigan were the better side until Mcmanaman went off injured. The goals were largely individual errors in that particular game.

Wigan played at Goodison twice last season and were arguably the better side on both occasions.

I’m not advocating Martinez, Laudrup has been my first choice throughout. But I think it’s unfair to judge him based on selected games with inferior players. I think that EB article actually has quotes from Roberto saying that he’s adapted his style to suit the players at his previous clubs, which I think we both agree is the best approach. People constantly give out this 29% win percentage, which is purely his Wigan one when it’s much higher if you include his Swansea days. A counter may be that Swansea were in a different league etc. so does that mean Vitor’s is 0%? Not saying you, but Vitor seems to be first choice with a lot on these boards and hardly anyone knows anything about him. I’ve spoken to 3 Portuguese people (all Sporting fans) and they don’t really rate him. They say as long as he beats Benfica they’ll win the league and he’s been quite lucky in achieving that so far. The real test for managers at Porto is Europe and he’s failed there.

Has our GD really been that good under Moyes. Maybe I need to go back and check the stats, I always think of us as a marginal side, who tend to finish with a low GD for our placing, due to 1 goal swings in most of the games.

As you say we’ll find out soon enough. I’m just looking forward to a different approach. For all the faults and people picking it apart, I actually like the positive approach to life that Martinez brings as opposed to the negative attitude that Moyes would often give off. If you were a player at Everton would you welcome the new manager coming in who favours positivity and attacking football. Who doesn’t hang his strikers out to dry but instead will try to find the positives in your performance, or would you want the manager who had his best attacking player back defending in his own area for large parts of the game? You could argue the same for the defenders, ‘Jags, hit the front man!’ or ‘Jags, pass and move!’ as a footballer I know which approach I’d prefer.

I agree with all of this.

I was actually at the Wigan/Arsenal game and completely agree.

I really think the players we have fit his system which is why i always wanted him here. Plus he has gotten the most out of realitve unkowns (McManahan, Maloney) and talented engimas (N'Zogbia). Speaking of which N'Zogbia should be available pretty cheap and there we a bunch of us clamoring for Moyes to sign him up last year.

A question to the Pereira doubters..How would you describe Porto's style of play?

I see Porto passing the ball quickly, to feet, closing the opposition down within seconds (the barca model). They know how to effectively counter attack under pressure. Their technical ability is miles above ours (barring Mirallas)

None of this is dependant on the opposition being rubbish as many are claiming. It is taught. I would love to see this approach taught at EFC with the quality of players we already have.

He would be my 2nd choice after Vitor . Any manager will be a risk but we need a manager who has the ability to take us foward even though it will be a risk . We have all seen them painful losses/draws when we have sat back and tryed to hold out but break under pressure .

With Martinez this would change IMO he would go after games from the start with the risk of conceding but if successful would get a few goals under or belt to calm down and get the win .

We are now in a position where we have a couple of flair players in Mirallas baines and Coleman so there wouldn't have to he a massive overhaul on the first eleven . Unless bill has some funds he could give Martinez then I think it's essential we get rid of fellaini and keep baines . This will gives us 24 million to get two new starting 11 players and a couple of players for depth .

Now onto tatics I don't think he will switch to a 3-4-3 regularly as i think he a smart man and knows that the team doesn't need to be changed thanks to moyes but just tinkered with . I do think he will change it to a 4-3-3 and using Barkley more . HIs defensive side is a worry but with the quality of a defenders and the help of our coaches we shouldn't have a problem

Really, really don't agree with this.
When we played Wigan at home and won 2 - 1 (just before we played Chelsea and lost 0 - 2) they were appalling.

We were pretty bad too mind you.

Worst game I watched at Goodison last year.

Can someone explain Martinez's contract situation in a bit better detail for me? He has resigned from his job, but presumably he's still under contract. I'm trying to figure out his position in these negotiations and the roll that Wigan play.

So people have been saying that Wigan would be due compensation. Entertain the possibility for a second that no club whatsoever goes in for Martinez. What's his recourse then. He has resigned so presumably wouldn't receive wages, but if his contract is still existent with Wigan, would he have to pay them to break the contract?

If his position really is as shaky as it seems, I think he wouldn't have much of a chance in the negotiations with Kenwright. This is good in terms of the wages he'll be on, but I don't think he's in any position to demand a guaranteed spending of a certain amount.

"There's no favourite I'll go with my gut instinct".
He then goes on and mentions the process will take 48 hours and there is a list.
Pereira and Martinez we know of,the others ? I stated earlier in the thread things are not as cut and dried as they appear,on hearing that from Bill am convinced they're not.
