I was burgled a few years ago while me, my wife and 4 kids were asleep upstairs. They came in and quietly disconnected every electrical item in the living room. They then moved into the dining room which has patio doors and barricaded the internal door with the sofa in case we woke up and came down. They then proceeded to remove all of the cushion covers to use as makeshift bags to carry their (i say their loosely) swag. Loaded it all up into my wife's car, and drove off. They even left an empty can of coke on the dining table that they helped themselves too from the fridge.

Took a while to recover from that. Couldn't sleep properly for months.

Add insult to injury, it took the insurance company 4 months to pay out because they thought the robbery was suspicious as we were in the house and didn't hear anything.

I remember the police officer who came around when we reported it. She hated insurance companies and coached us before we called the insurance company. She told us to say that the car keys were hidden and that the patio keys were not in the door (internally obviously). Even though she said that everyone keeps their keys in the door or near it in case of fire. She also said that if the car keys weren't easy to find, they may have gone upstairs to find them!!

From that day, we always leave our car keys out and never take them upstairs.

Scary stuff.

There's some real scum bags out there....
That's awful mate. Surprised the police told you that, but at least you got paid out. That was good of them to do so in some respect.. Some insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying out

I was surprised too. She was telling me loads of horror stories regarding insurance companies not paying out and how she couldn't stand them. They find any old loophole to withhold settling a legitimate claim.

She did you a real solid there, as sometimes the insurance companies will actually phone the investigating officer or the one who turned up and ask them for their " opinion " of the burglary - this is never revealed to the claimant. ( I used to deal with insurance companies when I worked for a solicitors )

The ground level staff in the insurance companies are under immense pressure from above, to knock back claims or reduce the payout.

You also have to bear in mind that is also one hell a lot of fraud goes on too with regards to bogus claims and " loading " claims.

( I`ve been burgled too and had similar problems with the insurance company with regards to the payout, so I know where you`re coming from )

She really did mate, we were very grateful.

Funnily enough, it was only the house insurance that was a pain. Car insurance paid out immediately, even though we heard that this should've been claimed on the house insurance as the keys were lifted from inside the house? Not sure on that one, but fair play to them for not rubbing salt in the wound. The loss adjuster for the contents insurance was lucky to leave our house alive. He was a right [inset profanity here].

I used to work in insurance regulation so I know all about their practices. A lot of them will try anything to get out of paying or make it near on possible to do so. Good that she let on, must have some morals
