It just seems to me we are just trying to nip in and punch other teams targets, Becao, Leeds, Tyler, Leeds, Lingard, West ham, have we even got a transfer strategy ? Scouts...

Cheap gambles is what we should’ve been doing more of rather than paying £30m+ fees for overhyped crap.

I think the transfer processes are more of a concern than the strategy. indications are that Managers, DoFs and even the owner bring in targets, and the Chairman is involved in negotiations. Totally inefficient process.
.........do we tho? I mean, I know Thelwell is here but I honestly can't recall ever hearing about any of our "scouts" anywhere.

Not a chance. At this point it’s relatively obvious that we are massively below the curve in modern scouting and player acquisition and we need to sort it.
I’ll give an example: in Baseball scouting changed massively as was popularised (and dramatised) in Moneyball. The Twins went from a highly touted and potentially championship winning team to the worst team in 2 seasons because they didn’t move with the times.
I’m not saying we should be purely stat watching like virgins, we should be adopting new techniques and blending them with what has worked historically. At the moment we are gambling on players who are available and have top flight experience which might work but there is of course a reason why said players are available.
…I’m sure there’s a scouting network. I recall Tony Grant being part of a group looking at a specific group, it might have been younger professionals at other clubs.

Well I just checked and it certainly doesn't fill me with confidence.
Our "Scouting and Operations Manager" is a 28 year old called Dan Purdy. He was first appointed to the job in 2019 (he has been at the club since 2013 but not sure what his previous position was or what qualifies him for his current position)
He resigned from his "Scouting and Operations Manager" job 2 days after Brands left, but was 'brought back' shortly after Thelwell was appointed.
Apparently he earns £3,500 per week.
