Sign a deal that means you'll get a big pay rise and if a club come in with the money, you can jump ship without fuss.
The £70mill price tag will put people off. A release clause less than that, will have clubs sniffing.
His agent isn't daft. He'd never let him sign a deal like that without some assurances.
But why would the club do that? Point of a new contract in this situation is surely to protect the club and compensate the player - the club gets the higher release fee, the player gets the higher wage.
Otherwise we'd just be paying him more money for literally nothing.

£60m is the new £40m; people haven't adjusted to that mindset yet, so it's not the whopping fee you believe it is for a striker who can score 20 goals a season, even if he is by and large absolute cack other than for that stat.

He wants to play in the Champions League. He's nowhere near good enough for the Real Madrids of this world, and he's too expensive for most other clubs to compensate.
So you are left with the nouveau rich clubs - he'd have no choice, otherwise he stays and he's not at a Champions League club. He's ambitious (and arrogant) so he'd see a move like that as a challenge.
