But why would the club do that? Point of a new contract in this situation is surely to protect the club and compensate the player - the club gets the higher release fee, the player gets the higher wage.

Otherwise we'd just be paying him more money for literally nothing.

£60m is the new £40m; people haven't adjusted to that mindset yet, so it's not the whopping fee you believe it is for a striker who can score 20 goals a season, even if he is by and large absolute cack other than for that stat.

So you are left with the nouveau rich clubs - he'd have no choice, otherwise he stays and he's not at a Champions League club. He's ambitious (and arrogant) so he'd see a move like that as a challenge.

There is no way Chelsea spend 60m on him when they have Costa and Batshuayi

Spurs wouldn't drop that amount of cash on someone to sit on the bench behind Kane
