Why people making a big deal about it now ? Been obvious for well over a year that he was never staying long term and would leave at end of this season or the one after regardless of contract.

I mean we all know from his countless interviews that he'd rather play elsewhere and would jump at the chance should someone better come in for him.

I don't see how these quotes of "no" change what people should have already known.

Looking at it from his perspective why the hell would he sign a new deal with some ridiculously over the top release clause that no one will ever pay ? He wants to leave, has done for two seasons. Signing a new contract inflates his value and makes it harder for teams to buy him.

Makes more sense for him to stall on contract and keep his value lower.

If he signs - he gets a bumper pay rise and can be part of this project as the main man for us and I presume a release clause would be inserted for him to join an established elite CL club if they come in for him

If he doesn't sign - he runs the risk of us selling him to absolutely anybody and peaking too early or failing to live up to expectations with the heavy transfer fee.

Not many players who have left us have been better off for it.

Whatever happens, we move forward.
