needs a break

if he gets injured step in Kone?

Aw hell naw!

I put this together for another thread and it is not intended as a dig against Rom. I love him and want him to stay. But it does raise questions about his effectiveness in a single striker role. Especially when not paired with someone like Kone to draw central defensive attention away from him:

Lukaku - 20 goals, 16 in the league (in 26) , 4 in cup games - ( in 6 )

But lets really get at it why don't we. It is goals per minutes played together that will give us a good idea if Lukaku plays better in terms of scoring with Kone on the pitch.

OK to summarize as I can tell your Math needs a little remediation:
Lukaku's Minutes per Goal with Kone ON the pitch:
All comps

1 Goal every 103.8 minutes
League Games:
1 Goal every 93.3 minutes
Cup Games:
Has not scored with Kone on the pitch in 137 Total Minutes over 8 games

Lukaku's Minutes per Goal with Kone NOT on the pitch:
All comps

1 Goal every 217.6 minutes
League Games:
1 Goal every 357.3 minutes (take away the penalty and his goals from open play is 1 in 536 minutes)
Cup Games:
1 Goal every 112.8 minutes

More facts
- In Cup Games RM has not generally played them together, Rom's Strength and skills allow him to dominate what is generally lower level competition and STILL his strike rate is lower in the cup games. In league games it isn't even close how much more effective Rom is in terms of scoring goals from open play as opposed to without Kone.
- Kone made a massive difference against WBA in the first league Game.
- In the league Lukaku scores 3.8 x's as many goals per minute with Kone on the pitch than off (take away the penalty and it is 5.7 x's as many goals) Not a flattering stat for Lukaku

Him being knackered could account for some of his dip in form but I also think his isolation is hurting as well.

Him being knackered could account for some of his dip in form but I also think his isolation is hurting as well.

He's much more effective when he has another forward taking away a marker, definitely.

I imagine that's the main reason Niasse has been brought in.

Wow, slagging off Lukaku and then praising Kone in the same post.

As I said not meant to slag off Lukaku - Love him - or say Kone is a great player. I think he is the type of player that serves a role that helps Lukaku. Perhaps Niasse will be the type of player that can do both - Help Rom and provide better defensive balance if our DM's are healthy.

I was really just trying to back up an argument that bringing on Kone v WBA was a logical Plan B with some facts to back it up (a plan B that didn't work mind you).

I was a bit surprised by the numbers Lukaku does seem to produce more with Gerry on the right and Kone (or someone) to help occupy a Central Defender. I guess that would only make sense, but maybe it causes us to be more exposed defensively.
