Romelu Lukaku

There is no debate here.

Romelu scored 25 goals in the Premier League for us in his last season. TWENTY FIVE!

No one comes close in the last 30 years, even the Yak in his best season. He is comfortably the best forward we have had since last winning the League.

@Tubey you are one of my favourites on here, you are quite sensible and always post interesting comments but you bizarre dislike of Lukaku has always bothered me, it’s like a blind man refusing a lapdance because you can’t see her face.

we had arguably the best striker of a generation smashing players and goals all over the show and you have routinely pointed out he didn’t do it against the big clubs which is a valid point but you seem to miss the obvious point we are utter turd — and this is where the blind man metaphor applies — we didn’t have the capability of choice, we took what we could grab, and (potentially?) drove him out cos he didn’t scored worldies against elite opposition, and now we are still not having replaced him with a £1.5m ex- Sheff UTD taking his place, and unfairly barracked every single week.

Just the 245 senior goals at the age of 26 and a half.

Let's see how the next period of his career goes through to the age of 30. He is at a very good club with Inter and may win a few trophies.

I need to take some time to absorb this analogy Bry, fair play to you

It blows my mind that some blues choose to berate his lack of goals against the top 4 as a reason to ignore his other achievements.

Like we have absolute class all over the pitch now don’t we

The difference is my ambition. Just because we haven't replaced him doesn't mean we can't.

I saw no point to persisting with a player that has a ceiling of 6th place. He was such a detriment to our overall play that we would never progress with him at the club. United couldn't progress with him either - it's no coincidence that they won three trophies with an aged Ibrahimovic leading the line and absolutely nothing when Lukaku was.

So that's my view - what's the point for settling for where you currently are? Lukaku was a glaring weakness in our progression. We needed to replace him. We haven't. But that doesn't make Lukaku any better - it was simply poor strategy from the club, specifically Steve Walsh.

You think we can get higher than 6th?

Right now? No.

But everything is in place for us to definitely have ambitions of the top four.

The club was horribly mismanaged under Walsh and Koeman after Lukaku left and that has set us back years. But with the money we're spending/wages we're offering there's absolutely no reason why we can't have ambitions of the top four in the medium to long term.

I'd rather have a striker that is capable of playing in a team that can challenge for continental places with consistent performances, than a striker who will score 25 goals against cannon fodder but go missing every time when you need to kick on, because our tactics are focused on one very limited technical footballer who is easily defended by good defenders.

Mate. Come on.

Mate. Come on.

Ibrahimovic scored 28 in all competitions and United won three cups.

Lukaku the following season scored 27 in all competitions and United won nothing.

The difference isn't raw goal output - it's actual footballing ability; to be able to get your side up the pitch consistently, to be able to attack from various outlets. Lukaku offers absolutely none of that.

I'll give you an example of what I'd prefer over Lukaku. Callum Wilson is twice the player Lukaku is. He'd improve us immensely. He'd get you 10-15 goals a season and be 10x the asset Lukaku is in general play. He'd improve everyone around him. That's the trade off, and what makes the difference at the elite level.

But if you have a Roy of the Rovers mentality and just see pure goals, you won't be able to see it.

In the modern game, you need someone who can link up play and get the best out of the rest of your attackers. Lukaku is a good netter, but almost comically bad in every other area of the game.

He scored against limited opposition as they drop back and allow the better team on, meaning Lukaku doesn't have to work to get his team into advanced areas and can poach.

Against better teams, they don't drop off. They stick tight to him higher up the pitch and its child's play to disposess him and break down an attack and counter.

It's why he'll obviously score against Brescia but do nothing against Juventus.
