Ronald Koeman discussion

My carpool mate is a Saints fan and was always saying Ron never gave the youngsters a chance at Southampton and he seemed to be carrying on that philosophy here, maybe he was giving the senior pro's a chance to impress, but something has changed his mind and he now appears to be willing to give the youngsters a chance, good on him, certainly in the case of Davies this is now paying dividends, I had been banging the drum for him to be given an opportunity and he's certainly made the most of it.

I guess it's all well and good giving senior players a chance to impress but he should already know players like Cleverley, Kone, Oviedo etc. aren't up to standard so the only alternative outside a transfer window has to be looking within which I thought he'd have done earlier. I know he was Saints manager and before that in Europe but I support Everton and still know which Newcastle players are garbage.

What concerns me is that he can't offer a single bit of praise to Koeman. He can't just turn around and say 'fair enough good on our manager for giving the young lad a chance' because he is so single minded in his hatred for our manager. That is all i was asking him, not asking for a write up on the man himself, just a yes he did well playing him.

Whilst Koeman deserves some credit for playing Davies it's not as if he just unearthed some gem from the U23s, loads could see Davies was ready to start and how good he was, that's why I just can't go overboard with the credit because IMO he should have been playing more game time than he's actually been given. Koeman will get more plaudits off me if he sticks with him against Leicester, a game where we'll need his high energy and enthusiasm, but for some reason I can't see it now Barry has been rested, will be happy to be proven wrong though.

EDIT: Forgot Gana was away! should mean Davies starts while he's away.

Schooling wouldn't help mate

He's proven once again that he only backs the youth when it suits him

Koeman has given some lads a chance in the past few weeks, so he doesn't deserve any real stick on that front. Yes, it might not be a long term thing depending on potential January signings, and it will certainly be under review for the rest of the season from us who want to see the kids get more of a chance, but he's picked some of the better younger players in the squad and given them some minutes

He deserves credit for it, but Zat is so busy with his anti-Koeman agenda that he won't let him have that credit, even though he's done exactly what a lot of us have asked. Starting Davies and giving him a whole 90 minutes was a brave move, but he did it because he trusted him

But no, let's ignore the possibility that creating an environment where Koeman is praised for playing younger players might in turn be conducive to him giving more of them a chance, and let's just create a scenario where he can never win no matter what he does

Everton That

Very good post Mikey.

Davies started the season not in the match day squad, then started making the bench, then got a few sub appearances - and a bit mroe each time, and has now started a full game - which arguably for Koeman personally was the most important game of the season after losing to them the other week, and he was left on for the entirety of the game when more senior players got subbed etc, a huge vote of confidence.

Holgate obviously features hugely in his plans, started games, been brough on in game, and seems to be anyway a cb we will go to whenever we go 3 at the back now

DCl - been trusted ahead of Valencia - and thats not something a manager would do who is only interested in the extreme short term IMO, the lads raw but obviously regarded as someone who has potential which is why he's been brought on in some big games - and started against the Saints.

Kenny and i think a couple of others have made the bench so far as well

HUGELY promising opening 20 games for me - who was someone who had a lot of doubts about the academy being watsed.

and whats more, people are creatures of habit, Koeman in the past has had jobs when he has heavily used the academy due to the quality in there, and that quality performing, if the likes of Davies and Holgate continue impresing, then it will by proxy open up the opportunity for more of the lads coming through, wouldnt shock me to see Kenny and Walsh get game time this year either

Certianly mate the real test here is sticking with him.

But i don't think Davies should have got more game time before now other than off the bench. When you consider as mentioned in another post, we have 2 league winning midfielders in the squad already, plus McCarthy who looked better before his injury again, so realistically Davies just being part of the squad was all he could have asked for. theoretically either Cleverley or Barry (lesser extent due to age obviously) should be first choice never mind as back ups based on their experience and achievements in their career to date.

So Koeman giving these players a chance before Davies is absolutely the right thing to do. Neither have impressed him and it is clear he can see the effect Barry has on the team. So now he turns to Davies and yesterday it worked really well. I am a firm believer in players keeping their place when in form so Davies should start the weekend, but then i don't suddenly expect him to be first choice at 19. He needs to learn the game still so give him the boost he needed by selecting him, but even Davies will know he isn't first choice now, part and parcel of the game.

The kids getting more game/bench time will depend on who, and how many players he brings in the window for me mate.

The lads at valencia were dropped from the squad with zero discussion, one being club captain and another being a veteran but still a star player for them...the football was akin to what we are seeing now at Everton...with results like 3 odd wins in 16 games (deja-vu) and no wins in 10 (i think) 12 or so months ago at southampton.

In short, he did everything wrong there and those players you are dismissive of were returned to the team after he was sacked and they finished out of relegation 13th/15th i believe.

Also, what is this 3 titles in 4 seasons?

he managed PSV/Ajax for a combined 4 seasons and won 3 league title with them mate, forgive me for saying but you can't use the excuse of 'they where by far the best team in Holland' for both teams at pretty much a very similar period of time, and if so maybe Koeman was the difference when he was managing which seperated them from each other?

OK mate lets analyze what your saying about the Valencia players

Your either saying that at Valencia Koeman didnt have a chat with the players and discuss if they should be dropped from the team? what manager would discuss a player being dropped for christs sake, or areyou saying that he gave no explanation about why they where being dropped? if so your wrong, this is from december that season when he first dropped them both

"They are not young any more. We have taken the decision not to call them up" for the games against Irun in the Spanish Cup and Zaragosa in the league, he said.
"They are sidelined for these two matches, and after that we'll see," he told a news conference.
"These are tough decisions that we have to make for the good of Valencia, which is the most important," the Dutchman said. "I am thinking about other, younger, players in order to change things."
"Santi" Canizares, who turned 38 on Tuesday and has 46 caps for Spain, has been at the club since 1998. His contract runs until 2009.
Skipper Albelda, capped 50 times by Spain, is aged 30 and is linked to the club until 2011.

As for them being returned to the team after Koeman was sacked - errr yes ofc they where, what incoming manager wouldn't after they basically undermined the previous one completely.

BTW as for being a star player, and maybe showing that it wasn't all Koeman in the wrong, Canizares had his contract terminated early (they paid him off) less than a month after Koeman was sacked - possibly a stipulation of a new manager perhaps?
Angulo lasted a bit longer and managed to play about 10 more games for the club under Emery - before he was released

Helguera who early season was praising Koeman also cam eout just before the end and stuck the knife in btw, but maybe that was in part to not recieving a new contract - which he said he wouldnt expect with Koeman manager, Emery btw released him when he took over as well

Baraja another who came out against Koeman - was a broken down player and only played a handful of games over the next two seasons as well for them - and indeed had only played a handful the preceeding couple - had like one good injury free season around then.

At Valencia you had a group of players on the down side of there careers who had gotten use to an easier ride, facing a disciplinarian manager who wanted to move the ones past it on from the club, and out of self interest they downed tools to get him sacked.

The fact is though mate, within a few months to a few years (of hardly any game time) none of those players played for Valencia anymore

The incoming manager Emery made sure of that

The kids getting more game/bench time will depend on who, and how many players he brings in the window for me mate.

Agreed mate, but right now I'd argue that they have both moved ahead of players in the pecking order none of us thought would have happened, and even with incomings they should see more game time than even the optomistic of us thought.

I actually think the incomings will be directly replacing the ones who have busted out, and hopefully that means rather than keeping players in the first team squad who have been 'demoted' the younger lads still have those chances

Can you show me a post of mine where i havent backed Tom Davies please?

*Clue: There isnt one.

Dunno what youre on about tbh.

Davies should have been playing ahead of Barry for ages now.

Holgate was dropped for no reason twice.

DCL is a weird one...come on as a sub and doesnt do much yet is ahead or Deulofeu, Lennon, Mirallas and Valencia it seems...

Davies should now keep his place...he has a chance as Gueye is off. History with holgate shows us he would be dropped if Gueye was available.

So zat, your opinion is he should have come in and by say November dropped two senior players in jags and Barry for Davies and holgate, or even earlier.

By the way that's exactly what he did at Valencia which you have been criticising him for, also as an added amusing little bit, one of those players given his chance at Valencia due to him dropping underperforming ageing pkayers like angulo was a young academy player called Mata.
