Ronald Koeman is worried his Everton players will not be physically ready to face Tottenham
The new Everton manager warned his side were only "70 per cent" physically ready for the visit of Tottenham to Goodison Park on Saturday and that "six or seven weeks off" was too long.

Koeman brought forward the start of pre-season training by three days to July 4 after quitting Southampton to succeed Roberto Martinez in mid-June, but believes the timetable he inherited leaves Everton in danger of being left behind.

"In my opinion the team is only on 70% of the fitness of what a Premier League player needs," he said.

"We do testing, runs and sprints. "At Southampton, we had a really strong team. In terms of a physical state, the team was high. I don't know about other teams, but if I compare here it is 70% and at Southampton it was 100%.

"But they had a holiday of six or seven weeks at Everton. I changed it to start the season three days earlier. "I had planned for Southampton to start the season one week or 10 days earlier because it is not good that players get six or seven weeks of holiday.

"That is one of the reasons why they are not on the level they need to be."

Koeman is adamant Everton the same mistake will not be made next summer when time off will be scaled back.

He has already imposed 9am starts for his squad with anyone who is late facing punishment and among other changes has ruled the dining room off limits to everyone bar squad members.

Everton trained twice on Tuesday, but Koeman believes it will be up three weeks before his side players are physically fit and revealed new signing Ashley Williams will not make his competitive debut at Goodison Park.

Williams's preparations have been disrupted by Wales' run at Euro 2016 and his £9m move from Swansea, while Romelu Lukaku and Seamus Coleman are also doubts.

"If I put the player (Williams) in on Saturday, then I kill the player with the risk of injury. I don't like that," added Koeman.

A £25m deal for Yannick Bolasie of Crystal Palace and an £18m swoop for Sunderland's Lamine Kone have been set up and should be completed next week.

Koeman has ruled out captain Phil Jagielka leaving amid interest from former manager David Moyes.
