Ronald Koeman discussion

I can't say I share the same affection for Stek. I mean he's alright, he's nowhere near as bad as Howard because he does make saves, but he is definitely capable of a blunder. For every City away performance there's a Chelsea/Burnley display.

That United gaff was as bad as any of Howards. A horrendous brain fart.

To be honest I have a lot of admiration for Joel, he got dropped for Howard for no good reason while everyone knew Howard was past it. Probably thought he was on his was out the door when we were linked with Heart, got dropped again for Steklenberg earlier in the season then comes back in and has the joint 2nd best keeper stats in the league with Lloris with a fine display against city. Fair play to the lad, done more then enough to be given a shot at the jersey especially given he's still relatively young as keepers go

This.

We'll have to disagree mate

I think Stek is a much better keeper. A lot of the goals he's shipped can be attributed as much to him being left stranded by defenders as it could his own personal mistakes

He makes straight up highlight reel saves sometimes. He's better with the ball at his feet than Joel and distributes the ball better

He's much, MUCH better than Robles in my opinion

Again, Robles will bomb out eventually and the tide will turn, as it always does

Bit in bold - serious? Watch the goals again mate, he's out of position for most of them. Only a yard here and there, but it's that yard that means he has no chance getting to them, which is why he often just stands there and watches it go in.

Howard under martinez was left stranded and made a scapregoat for a very poor defensive set-up from the manager, but Stek doesn't have the same issue, he's just not a good keeper, which is why he;'s struggled to hold down the no. 1 spot at quite a few clubs.

Also, who cares how good he is with the ball at his feet if he doesn't actually make the saves required? I wouldn't say he was anything special with it at his feet anyway.

You're right about Stekelenburg in the first paragraph but wrong about Howard in the second. He didn't make any saves ever and cost us week in week out.

I'd have no problem with Joel being dropped after an error if there was any evidence of Koeman holding Stekelenberg to the same standard.

I'd be worried it sets a president for any keeper coming in ala Fergi at United. If he applied the same logic to every player in the pitch you'd have nobody able to start a game. Mistakes are unavoidable and it's just one of those positions that means it unfortunately usually leads to a goal. Consistent errors are what get me worried

At the end he didn't mate, his confidence was well and truly shot by then, as in most games if we gave the ball away we'd only get it back once the opposition had a shot! They'd just run through on goal unchallenged week after week.

I remember when we beat Sunderland 6-2 and he made some very important saves/blocks in that game, at crucial times. But we won 6-2 so people think we battered Sunderland. That's just how it was, Howard was an easy excuse at the start for why we weren't winning, but as a team we just let sides run right through the middle of us. But yeah by the end he was finished.

He was awful from 2012 onwards mate, it was honestly double figures each season in points he'd cost us. Not always outright "mistakes", just stuff like what Bravo is doing at City, not saving anything. Bravo reminds me a lot of Howard except he can actually pass.

Funny you say that cos at the game on Sunday I felt Bravo is suffering like Howard was. I'm not saying either is a great keeper, but when your defence leaves you exposed like that, and chances are really good chances and not just half chances, you are going to let goals in and it's not long before confidence drops and people blame the keeper. When the real problem is the massively open style of play which lets sides have really good chances against you.

Like the Lookman goal, people will say Bravo should have saved it, but who was picking Lookman up or covering? Unchallenged strikes at this level from that distance should be scoring goals 9 times out of 10. There was really only the Davies goal which had any kind of challenge to it.

totally agree.

I think Carragher was spot on - City are open to so many one on ones at the moment simply because of how shoddy their defence is.

That q&a today about the r'ship between him and Walsh. Said it was good, but described Walsh's work as 'a function'.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Joel mate. He's not great but he has most definitely improved in the last year or so. Either way we need a new keeper very soon.

And might well keep improving, Mike.

Personally, I am very relaxed about the goalkeeping sutuation now that Joel is showing signs of kicking on and I would not be one bit surprised to see him establish himself as a top class goalkeeper with us.

IMO he has half a season now to claim the right to start next season as our No. 1 goalie.

But, ok

"It's good," he said. "We have daily contact and speak about the team. Of course he's working hard to get every detail and about the scouting to bring new people in."

"In his function we have good relations and we need to have them. We also need to agree about players and that's the daily basic of our communication.
