Ronald Koeman discussion

The point being made here is that while our youngsters will be talking this week about promotion to the top tier of academy football, some of Southampton's will be preparing to walk out at Wembley. That's a bit of a contradiction to the conclusion drawn by Koeman that there was nothing coming out of their academy just 12 months ago.

And while I'm here, yes, I've completely bitten but got to point out your inaccuracies.

They're about to win the top tier of academy football, the Premier League 2 Division One, not promotion to it.

Seeing as we currently don't play European Football, thanks to the previous regime, we are unable to compete in the top level - UEFA Youth League. So, in summary, they're the best academy team in England and last night the wiped the floor with an overhyped side that has been living off the scraps of their last successful players - Bale, Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

While this doesn't fit an agenda, it is actually, shockingly for this, the truth.

To be fair though mate out if the ones you mentioned only Sims is a teenager. The others are 22/23 I think, same age as Lukaku and Barkley. Not exactly comparable to the likes of Walsh and Dowell.

Once again, Dave.

From December 2014, 2 and a bit years ago.: https://southamptonfc.com/news/2014-12-13/boss-sad-after-heskeths-bow-cut-short

There are highly rated talents and then there are the names you've plucked which they see as serviceable but there are doubts about them long-term. Southampton are playing the Sims' and the likes now because of the cutting down in spending.

Hesketh is the one they rate and he was brought on by Ron.

I am unsure as to whether @davek, upon getting another 'bite', chuckles or cackles.

Regardless, he must chuckle or cackle a lot.
I actually think he's some kind of highly sophisticated AI system designed to investigate and provoke human behaviour. I can't think of any other reason which would explain how he's at it 24/7.

Ronny Koe tho, good lad ain't he.

There is a thread about him as it is. Perhaps we could stick more manager bobbins please?

I think Koeman has a very different attitude regarding youth to the previous manager, different attitudes but I don't think one is better or worse than the other.

RM (who must be given his share of the credit for the excellent academy at Everton believed in bring players through and maybe letting them learn on the job by putting them in the first team.

RK will only put players in his team that can perform as first choice players. They can learn their trade at the academy or on loan, but you only get in the Everton first team when you are good enough to stay there. I think possibly Kieran Dowell may be the player who has done least well because of that change of direction.

We have seen Koeman giving young players their chance. The lack of activity in the January window is explained in part at least I think by the manager believing that he could not sign anything better than what was already on our books for certain positions.

Fair points.

But on Dowell, I think he's the type of player that wont get a look in under Koeman. He's one of those players who can change things in an instant if he's on the ball and allowed to play. I think Koeman views such players as a luxury (wrongly). You need vision in the team, and this one lacks creativity.

Good post, especially on the last bit. Koeman's interest in the Youth Teams helped shape our window.

While a lot of people begged for January signings at the back, Koeman's daily meetings with Unsworth and having around 50% of the 23s around his first team training on a daily basis definitely had some sway. Callum Connolly - who to me should be at least in the top 3 of the highly rated defenders we have - was sent out on loan to beef him up, under the instructions of Koeman and Unsworth.

Antonee Robinson was one who caught the eye of many last night but he's known around the club as someone who can absolutely break through. I posted at the end of the window that he should be around the first team for a period of time come May. Why? Because Koeman rates youth players who can have an instant impact on the team and also stick around.

That's the reason why Tom Davies has made the step up and completely out jumped Dowell and Walsh. He's proved he's ready to have an impact and also stick around for a bit, while not looking of his depth. It's the same reason why Dowell has pushed for a loan, he's got all the talent and magic but not the physical ability - right now - to stick around amongst full Premier League and international players.

A notion about Koeman and the younger players completely refuted in his own words: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spor...koeman-wont-blood-everton-youngsters-12266726

“What we do is analysing young players, it is about Tom Davies, it is about Kieran Dowell, it’s about Liam Walsh, it’s about Dominic the striker, Kenny the right full-back,” Koeman said.

“The Under-23 competition cannot be compared to the Premier League. They train a lot of times with the first team and if there is a moment that they show they are on the level of other players in their position then I will give them the chance. It is also a physical question about young players. Everyday we have the contact with David Unsworth and they need time.”

“It is so easy to say, he played fantastic, he needs to play in the first team,” he added.

“No, they don’t understand the level of the Premier League and they need time, they need time. We are not playing in Holland – if so yes they are ready. But ready for the PL? and if I bring a young player it is not for one game and then I will show the confidence in that young player. Still they are not ready.”

Sorry, Dave.
