Ronald Koeman discussion

Ronny K, fielding the most teenagers in the whole league, hating the kids.

Yeah but he didn't at Southampton and as we know performance at previous clubs is crucial when assessing an Everton manager (apart from Martinez of course, that wasn't valid discussion, oh except for the cup win, you could discuss that, but not any of the relegation stuff).

Fair points.

But on Dowell, I think he's the type of player that wont get a look in under Koeman. He's one of those players who can change things in an instant if he's on the ball and allowed to play. I think Koeman views such players as a luxury (wrongly). You need vision in the team, and this one lacks creativity.

No disrespect, Davek, but you're not a manager nor a professional coach. I trust the views of a footballing legend.

He won't get a look in this season because he's been pretty poor to be fair. When he did get a chance previously he never impressed either.

You're too kind. Most have said I was average at best but it's true what they say - 'legend' clearly is an overused term. Anyway since you trust my opinion, I'll tell you. Koeman is doing a darn fine job.

Yet he has adopted his system to allow Barkley Davies and Lookman to all have a starting spot? Are these not creative players? He has reinstated Baines and Coleman after Martinez's flirtation with CBs in full back areas (Galloway and Browning), are these not creative players? His major buy (sadly injured) is a creative winger.

This team could do with a deep lying playmaker in the mould of Arteta but that is a problem that the previous manager failed to address and so did Moyes once Arteta had gone. In fact its probably the hardest position in football to fill which is why Bayern still play 35 year old Alonso, United still play Carrick, Juventus held onto Pirlo for so long and Barca havent successfully replaced Xavi. Koeman instead has shored up defensive mid and given his forward players license to create, when they're on it performances like the win v City happen, when they're collectively poor you get those annoying away draws. At least now though the solid base is at least there to stop the losses.

In my view Barkley Davies Lookman and Lukaku whilst all talented in different ways are not what I would call consistent as an attacking unit. All of their finishing (apart from Lukaku) is inconsistent, and some of their final balls are wayward, thats to be expected from young players though. If Dowell is below this level at the moment then its right that he's not in the team. As soon as he brings that consistency I'm sure Koeman wil put him in as he has the others.

In which case we can expect a club who prizes such attributes to come in for him during the summer I guess mate, otherwise your just talking bobbins yet again ain't ya?

Dowell has me in a quandary. I think his ability, vision, technique and range of passing is quite possibly unequalled by anybody in the first team squad.
But then, he plays well at under 23 level, but is not towering above at other players at this level...and he should be.

I don't think the manager picks the player for his team. I think the player makes the manager pick him for his team.
I look at the performance by Kieran Dowell last night and I ask myself who I would take out of the first team to play him and the answer is nobody. At the moment Dowell is more Deulofeu than Barkley. I would love the see Dowell taken off after an hour not able to give another ounce , at the moment I see a player that could go on for another forty minutes or longer.

I am hoping that he was not sent out on loan as the management recognise the talent they have and are trying to turn him into the player they want.

“What we do is analysing young players, it is about Tom Davies, it is about Kieran Dowell, it’s about Liam Walsh, it’s about Dominic the striker, Kenny the right full-back,” Koeman said.

“The Under-23 competition cannot be compared to the Premier League. They train a lot of times with the first team and if there is a moment that they show they are on the level of other players in their position then I will give them the chance. It is also a physical question about young players. Everyday we have the contact with David Unsworth and they need time.”

“It is so easy to say, he played fantastic, he needs to play in the first team,” he added.

“No, they don’t understand the level of the Premier League and they need time, they need time. We are not playing in Holland – if so yes they are ready. But ready for the PL? and if I bring a young player it is not for one game and then I will show the confidence in that young player. Still they are not ready.”

Sorry, Dave.
He didn't rate them, then Gueye was an enforced absence and the introduction of Davies was forced on him and it was a success. That's all we saw two weeks after he made that downbeat analysis of the youngsters.

Mason Holgate started the first game of the season, Dave.

This is a fact. If he didn't rate the Yoof, he wouldn't have played. This is also a fact.
