Keeping Lukaku is crucial. IMO I think the whole of the club's fate for the next few seasons depends on it. Where will we get another talent like him again for the price paid?
It sounds harsh but it's almost true to say that Everton are Lukaku + luggage.
The only points total worth bothering about is the one after 38 games. That needs to be up over 70 for where we want to go.
I think that underestimates his status massively, tbh. The clubs around Europe who can afford him will be well and truly interested. Not sure how many CL clubs there are that want him, maybe PSG, Bayern? No one bothered to come in for him last season, don't think many are actually that bothered by him. Ironically, the fact he plays for us makes him less appealing to the big clubs.
Take 60 goals out of this teams last four seasons and we'd be toast. Where does this team get goals from besides him?Think that last bit is way too harsh mate. He is the main/only striker for sure, and the team is set up to max that out. But that could be said of many sides.
Summer will tell. Like I said, think he will sign that contract.
Great, so we'll get over 70 points this season. Good to know.Dave, your very very fond of quoting the 72 point season at anyone who will listen, so for comparrasions sake lets take a look at exactlyhow we compare to that 'amazing - never to be repeated season' - at the 26 game mark of each of those seasons
13/14 season, played 26, scored 37, conceded 27, +10 Goal Difference, 45 points
16/17 season, played 26, scored 42, conceded 27, +15 goal difference, 44 points
So basically at this point in both managers first seasons, we are 1 point worse off, 5 goal difference better off, have scored 5 more (given you have criticised us as an attacking team in comparrision with Martinez ones), and have the same defensive record.
Here are the relative positions that both Managers inherrited in terms of prior seasons league finishes btw - so you can see quite clearly the state of the team inherited.
12/13 season - the one Martinez inherited - 6th placed, 63 points, scored 55, conceded 40. +15 goal difference
15/16 season - the one Koeman inherited - 11th placed, 47 points, scored 59, comnceded 55, +4 goal difference.
So in comparassion, Koeman took over a team that had finished 5 places worse, had 16 points less, had scored 4 goals more and had conceded`15 more.
and yet your trying to hold him to the standard of 'unless he matches martinez then hes a failiure', utterly laughable, especially given the FACT (said in Rafael voice) that he currently IS matching those standards, given a hugely disadvantaged starting position in comparrasion

He is THAT crucial. Of course we can replace him, but not with an equal in terms of quality, and the price would be horrendous.
Mate, what did the magical 72 points achieve? The only points total worth bothering about is the one after 38 games. That needs to be up over 70 for where we want to go.

He's scored one quarter of all our PL goals in the last 4 seasons. We are being carried by him. No one comes close.Of course. And I agree, he is crucial. As every clubs main striker is to them. Hardly unique to Everton. Other than at time of writing, an obvious replacement from the current squad is hard to see.
It's a benchmark. A tally that we must emulate again if we are to get top four. And to get that level of points you have to be very bold...which I suspect isn't in this managers character.Mate, what did the magical 72 points achieve?
EL?
With respect, I'd understand if it'd got us CL but it didn't.
