Ronald Koeman discussion

Funny enough I was listening to a podcast yesterday and one of the questions sent in for the panel to answer was who is the most over rated manager on the planet?
The three answers given were Guardiola( which got a little bit of stick)and the other two were Koeman and Tuchel.

Tuchel was brilliant at Mainz and did well will Dortmund, not overrated imo. His problem came from confronting his board about selling players he wanted to keep I believe.

Unlike the other two he doesn't get rated by proxy of a stellar playing career either.

Guardiola and tuchel for me are a mile above koeman. They both innovated a style and system of play, koemans not imaginative or innovated in the slightest, but very much a play it by numbers manager.

there where a whole host of problems, like a really long list! That was just one of the issues.

But yeah, he a good coach. Although last season was a struggle in the league for a long while, and he didn't help himself really. But he has the makings of a fine coach, wherever he may land next.

Don't rate Guardiola or Tuchel tbh. Too much style when sometimes a bit of pragmatism is needed.

Find it a tad strange that some think he may walk because the board haven't backed Koeman considering we made 9 signings.
This is Koeman's squad now, so there can't be any excuses.

Lads, seriously, you cant blame Koeman for not getting a CF and Left defender. He made it clear that's what he wanted.
Its not his fault they didn't get them.
If its the case that he did prioritise (questionable, but would like to know) then he made the right decision in going for Pickford and Keane first.

If your building a side to medium to longer term (3 to 6 years), and to get them contending for top 4 position/title then you got to get your defence sorted first, including the link between defence and midfield. I'd say he'd be more pissed about not getting a left back than a striker, and not just for the defence, but for the pace and drive that the position gives.

The midfield is obviously critical in terms of how good the defence is. And with the midfield competition, the experience, the potential that's been brought in...well if you want to judge how good a coach he is judge him on this. Judge him on what he does with the defence-midfield link over the next couple of seasons (and how many goals are conceded). If its good (and low) then we can legitimately start thinking about the top 4/6 (not just 6th/7th or worse) for some time to come. The Blues will be where they should be. This club is much greater than just wanting to pick up the scraps, fighting for crumbs, hoping Arsenal or Spurs have a bad season (Liverpool always).

I'm impatient at the impatience. No, fuming! What do you want us to do. Go for the short term solution, put the finger in the dyke and hope we hold on. This mentality has to be broken. Giroud was not the answer.
Lukaku is symbolic of all this. While we had a striker banging in the goals (mostly against teams below us) there was always the nagging truth that it was covering up the weakness, the flaws, the faults. And then he left. Everton was the stepping stone.
Without the approach Koeman is taking we wouldn't be looking ahead, we'd be looking down, how much further are we going to drop. Maybe it'd be propped up by a signing here and there, but the nagging doubts would remain.

Personally, I'd rather be looking at Lookman...Calvin-Lewis, Vlasic, Davies (and Dowell) than Giroud or Wellbeck. Rather be looking at Rooney than Benteke. And looking to see who else steps up.

I'd rather be looking at the blood and guts than the band aid approach. COYB!
Thank god there is somebody else who lives in the real world

He said at least ten times and very publicly that we need/needed a striker. He wasn't given one.

Ronald Koeman makes no secret of his disappointment about missing out on his main striking transfer target in summer – believed to be Olivier Giroud – but is realistic enough to accept that even with a new line-leader Everton would have a tough job cracking the top four.

“Even with the best striker the top four is always going to be difficult,” the Everton manager said. “We can try but everybody else is making their squads stronger too. We brought in some good young players but we lost 25 goals through losing Romelu Lukaku and we need to replace that productivity. Players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sandro Ramírez are going to get more chances because we missed out on our No1 target, but we have to understand Sandro is 21 and Dominic 20.

“Come on, this is the Premier League, not junior football. These are quality players but they need time to adapt and time to improve. It is also important for young players like that to have older players in the side who they can learn from. That’s why I am disappointed we missed out on our No1 option, particularly as at one time everybody involved thought we had him.”

Koeman refuses to name names, though he is willing to admit that the specific striker he required was one capable of operating as a target man. “That is a good option for us because that is how we like to play football,” he said. “If you are being pressed then the long ball can be a solution if you have a target man in your team. Maybe also if you are not winning and you need a goal such a player can be an effective plan B. That, I think, is why Tottenham have just signed Fernando Llorente from Swansea.”

Everton remained confident right up to the end of the window, though it appears Koeman’s demands were so specific that not just anyone would do. “Once you start looking at options two and three you have to have the right price for the right player,” he said. “Some of the prices people were asking were ridiculous, so we didn’t get what we wanted in the end. We would like to play in the same way as we did last season, but maybe now in several aspects we will need to be a little bit different. We will have to find the best way for the team. We may start looking for a striker again in January but right now I’m just happy we finally finished this transfer window. At least I was until I woke up and there was the story about Wayne Rooney.”

Rooney is expected to play on Saturday against Spurs, Jordan Pickford is fit to resume in goal but the injured Ross Barkley’s whole Everton future is in doubt after the collapse of a proposed move to Chelsea. “First we must wait until he is fit again but I don’t know if anything will change,” Koeman said. “It is a strange situation.” Spurs are thought to retain an interest in Barkley, who is not expected to stay at Everton beyond the year left on his contract, and it may be inconvenient for Koeman to rehabilitate a player simply to put him in the shop window.

Koeman is very much an admirer of Spurs, citing them as an example Everton could usefully follow in their quest to move up the table. “They have done what we need to do,” he said. “They are genuine title contenders now. They might not have had quite the start they expected but I like the way they play football. They are one of the strongest teams in the Premier League, in my opinion.”

Thing is who is to blame for that? Cant blame Moshiri or even worse Bill, its not there job to go out and find one, so who is to blame, Walsh? He should of been given one, i agree on that but since all the targets we went for openly we got I would imagine if the club went for a striker they would of got him, but did Koeman identify one? or rather his scouts/director of football, for me this is the problem.

He did make it clear that they had options, but when they couldn't be convinced he said it was pointless going to options 5&6 because they were not of the quality.

Think the problem is Walsh's. Koeman and him identify players and it's up stevie boy to do the convincing, that this is the club for them. I think we were in for Giroud, and I think we stuck all our eggs in one basket and it backfired

He also said along the lines of we went for our top few options and once it become clear these players were not available we didnt see any point in going for the next tier down as they would not improve the squad which is fair enough.

£30m for Kenneth Zohore. I know we are (allegedly) minted but that's insanity.

Odd that so many forum member just will not accept this.

The answer might be in goats reply above what you wrote?
