Ronald Koeman left Southampton for Everton after two years in charge at St Mary's
Koeman, who says it was football ambition rather than a huge salary hike that prompted him to quit Southampton and join Everton, has faced a backlash from Saints fans for quitting the Europa League qualifiers for a club that finished five places below them last season.
But he hit back at claims it was simply down to the lucrative three-year contract worth £18million he has signed at Everton – and more to do with the ambition of new majority share-holder Fahrad Moshiri who will back Koeman with a £100m transfer war chest.
Already a multi-millionaire from his illustrious playing career and 16 years as a manager in four different countries, the Dutch legend said: “If it was about money, I can stop [working] tomorrow. It’s about more than money.
“I had a good contract in Southampton. All the managers in the Premier League are well paid. You can buy two cars, but you can only drive one car.

Express Sport takes a look at who Ronald Koeman might look to bring in at Everton during the summer transfer window
“In football you need ambition. A new project can give you a new challenge, a new spirit, a new ambition. When I spoke to Everton, the plan, the project, the history of the club was interesting.
“If I didn’t see ambition in Everton, I wouldn’t come to here and that’s maybe a good message to all of these players.
“Everton’s owners and their fans expect more than the last couple of years and I think it’s realistic to do better and fight for European football. I said the same at Southampton and I think Everton can do more.”
Koeman, 53, lifted the lid on his
controversial decision to quit Saints by claiming he was willing to see out the final season on his three-year contract on the south coast but Southampton wanted him to commit to a new deal - the terms of which left him unimpressed – because they feared uncertainty over the manager’s future would have a negative effect on the team’s performances next season.
“My first option was to continue at Southampton, to do my last season of contract but it was not possible,” he added. “Les Reed said to me that it was not possible to go through my last year of contract without knowing what would happen after that. That made it more difficult.
“I didn’t think it was a problem because I signed a one-year contract on three occasions with Feyenoord in Holland. I then got a proposal [of a new contract] from Southampton and, in my opinion, it was not what I liked to see. Then the whole Everton story came out, their interest in me and also the interest from my part.
“I know you can expect this reaction [from the fans] but maybe this reaction will be a little bit different now because I have not spoken before about why they did not accept me seeing out the last year on my contract. They said I had to sign a new contract and we didn’t agree.”
Koeman now has to convince Manchester City target Stones and Chelsea target Lukaku – as well as Barkley – that
Everton can pull themselves out of mid-table mediocrity and challenge for the top four.
“The best way is always to keep the best players,” he said. “Barkley is a young player, Stones is a young player, Lukaku is one of the best strikers and you like to keep them. But I’ll have meetings with them and we’ll see what happens.
“What I can say is that I will do everything to keep Lukaku because he is a key player. He is a goal scorer, he’s a strong No 9 he’s a strong number nine, he’s still only 23 and I think he can improve."
Koeman has appointed his brother Erwin as his assistant but will keep Everton legends Duncan Ferguson and David Unsworth in his coaching team.
