I have no idea what this comment is supposed to mean.
The point is that Koeman has to be pragmatic and given the current circumstances with a very poor, slow, devoid of invention midfield, erratic wingers and playing Lukaku up front alone is not working and has not worked for a couple of years.
In the absence of fresh players until the next window mixing it up a bit and playing longer, going to a 4-4-2 system is a decent response.
Don't get me wrong mate, I'm no PL manager but if the above is true in terms of his reasoning then I find it all the more baffling.
Because what he is saying is:
None of the players I have fit the system that I want to play, in an attacking sense.
What is even more startling is his assertion that none of the kids are ready either, all of whom are at an age where he they are far more likely to readily take on new ideas with ease.
In the meantime, he is going to serve this up until little by little he dismantles the team. We aren't talking about a three year process imo, we are now talking about 5 years +. Easily.
Klopp, Pep, Jose, Pochettino... these guys came in and despite not having the players to play their system, made them play it anyway. I very much doubt Kolorov will be playing for City after this season, for example, but he's still having to play the Pep way. What is our way? Why aren't we writing off this season, if we have to, in order to set a standard/way of playing which we can adopt for the whole of his tenure. After all, anything higher than last season's finish is a success.
I genuinely wouldn't mind the inconsistency if I felt like I was watching something develop. A Koeman team (whatever that may be). Instead yesterday I watched us punt a ball to Lukaku who would sometimes win the duel, sometimes not, but in any event pass the ball to one of our wingers whilst he then had to sprint to get in the box.
Genuinely baffling.
