Obviously we were in the midst of the League Cup Semi-Finals last season, so I can see why some are loathe to say we're definitively better off now at this exact point
What I will say is that the calmness I had at the start of the season has generally remained. Obviously I'd like to see us do some more business in this window, but we've got two signings in relatively early and Koeman seems to be gradually doing the following;
A - Putting the team together that he wants
and
B - Starting to get that team gradually playing a bit more football over just long ball
Still lots of work to be done, but I don't feel as negative or desperate about Everton as I did in Martinez's last two seasons, so there's that at least
I'm hoping he does much better in the cups next season, but sometimes you'll have a bad year in the cups, like we did in 14/15, so I'm not using that as a stick to overly beat him with in his first season. If he does it again next season, then yes that's a cause for concern, but at the moment I've not got the knives out over it
I've said this quite a lot in the past 6 months or so, but I feel it bares repeating, this process will take time.
Yes, we haven't had as great a run thus far as we did in 13/14, but we've had a considerably better start than we did in the previous two seasons and we've had some good wins against Top 6 sides, and a few draws peppered amongst them as well
We need to do better against the teams further down the table, and losing the Derby was a kick in the nards, but overall being 7th at this exact moment in time is a slight improvement over past seasons. It's not where we want to be, and not where we should be aiming in the future, but for a new managers first season after two really awful League campaigns it is at least a step in the right direction. There has been some improvement, however slight
A buzz phrase over the pond at the moment is "draining the swamp". There's no disputing in my eyes that things had become decidedly toxic and unpleasant during the end of the previous managerial reign. We were divided as a fan base on here between cultists and plotters. The last remnants of that war are still being fought, mostly in this thread. In fact, the plotters and cultists have now ironically swapped places!
I propose a solution
Let's put an end to this age of plotters and cultists, and just go back to being supporters eh?
I really think it's too early to decide on Koeman one way or the other, so how about we take a balanced view on him and give him the time he needs to give us the answer to the 7 Million Pound question, "Is he going to be a good Everton manager?"
The ball is in your court Mr. Koeman, let's see where you take us next
Peace Out
