That it though in a nut shell mate really mate, you beleive England can win the world cup - even that they should. Thats media driven hype, you have to be very very good or very very lucky, England for however long i have watched them havent really been either apart maybe from Italia 90. There is nothing to justify the expectation on the national team, you should expect maybe as a minimum as quater final and a semi final would be an excellent showing, you need luck to win the whole thing - thats the way every other country looks at it.
The problem with England is two months after qualifying, the media starts talking about winning it - there is nothing to justify that in the national team. It seems in England their is an assumption that the national team is great when really it has never really performed well in contempory tournaments. As per usual the team then fails to meet these expectations, leaveing the dissapinted masses to scapegoat some poor unfortunate player, like Green - whos career will prob never recover. Is it any wonder those players are playing with so much fear - its sad becasue you do actually have some really good players and the tournament is pooer for it.
Fair play to Rooney though - at least hes not sheepishly slumping away like the majority - what he is essentialy saying in his simple way is what i have above!
The national hype, pressuere, expectation and media driven public lynchings are whats wrong with the national team.
Ok, well let me retort here.
I don't believe England can win the world cup, just like I don't believe Everton will win the league next year. I want them to, and I hope they will, but I am used to disappointment.
Your also saying that the media are the voice of the nation, the media have one goal and one goal only. Selling newspapers, bumping ratings, getting people to text in, etc..... - all comes under the one group of MAKING MONEY.
As for the players, well it's the Phil Neville syndrome isn't it? Come monday morning your expecting a Phil Neville report if we have lost on the weekend, and it's all packed full of - "we need to do better" and stuff of that ilk. Were getting it now and we get it all the time. For me I'd rather they shut up and just played football. Rooney has to raise his PR, this is his stage, he's clearly not doing enough on the pitch - so get some headlines anyway you can. Raise your stock, get your missus back in the limelight too.
He should have kept his mouth shut, and then come Slovenia he volleys one in from 30 yards and stop the booing that way, instead of complaining about the fans reaction to shiteness. He takes the plaudits when he's on fire, so for me the reverse is fair game.
Reply with your feet not your gob - and show your a better person. For me has just shown that he is just like them that boo him, and as a previous caller said - if he wasn't playing he would be booing them also.
