To be fair I think they were winning 2-1 when Ross went off, Lampard tried to shore things up for a reason. 2-1 can easily turn to 2-2, as it did, by an own goal, hard to legislate against mistakes such as that.

He put Willian on and moved Mount into the number 10 and they lost a grip on the game.

Before that, they almost went 3 up and kept pressure on United after they made in 2.1.

Lamps has said they went for the 3rd goal to kill the game. But to me, they lost their shape doing that.
