Ross Barkley

The expression 'shoe-horning players' has been a bit over-used lately, but I believe RM has been doing exactly this a bit too much. Barkley starts ahead of Naismith...he is a much better footballer box to box.
Tbh think martinez rates Barkley as a better choice for number 10 in most games than Naismith (or Osman).

But he hasn't got a great choice of wingers at the moment and to me looks to be seeing if Barkley can fill in for Mirallas as an alternative to Pienaar/Atsu/McGeady or moving Naismith/Osman out there. Barkley has played well in the past as the LM in a 433, for example Arsenal at home, so was probably worth seeing if he could do it.

Can he be as good as Gascoigne?.... He looks like he is one step away from it for me, he maybe doesn't have the turn of pace Gazza did, definitely not the consistency yet.

Gazza, pace? That's not a facet I'd have particularly associated with him. But anyway, Gazza v Barkley, no contest so far.

I think he was quite fast with the ball, I mean I think he can dribble with more pace than Barkely, he was pretty quick of the mark as well. But rightly pointed out, this was mostly during his early years.

I mean skillwise can he be as good?
To me, Barkley looks like a slow learner. He still makes the sort of mistakes he was making several years ago eg turning into trouble, leaving passes short, making the wrong decisions. I tend to put the blame for all this on Moyes not playing him sufficiently, but I do think he has a problem with what's frequently termed as a player's 'footballing intelligence'.

I'm still waiting for him to turn in the sort of performance that we believe him to be capable of. He, like many of our other players, seems to be completely out of sorts when not given time and space on the ball.

Disappointed by him so far this season. Hope he's not having any lingering effects from his injury.

I would say that's exactly what it is mate, just his injury. He's missed a big chunk of the season and the only way he's going to get that match fitness back is by game time so I think we are going to have to be patient with him mate. International break perfect timing so if he plays crap he can do it for England instead ;)

It does seem we have a dearth of wide players coupled with an abundance of #10s. Can Eto'o play winger?

I'm joking.
