I've just seen the highlights of the game and thought he looked ok.readimg the match thread made me think he had a shocker. I should have known better

That's what happens when you watch the highlights. Whenever he picked the ball up in the center and was able to turn and run at them he was brilliant.

He didn't link up very well either on the left or at the edge of the box whenever we had to break them down but it wasn't so much that he was playing badly. It just looked like he didn't know what he was supposed to be doing.

I think Martinez is causing him to overthink his game. He should just tell him to play in the middle and whenever he gets the ball shoot, dribble, pass forward or switch the ball wide depending if the pass is on. If he loses it or misplaces a pass then so be it. His natural talent will do the rest.

He likes to run at people from deep. Our system is to strangle teams with possession football, which is ending with us facing near enough ten behind the ball as we meander slowly up the field. Problems for Barkley....he will play better against the better teams that set out to attack and commit against us.

I completely agree with this.

I think we need a more creative minded #10 in to start against the teams that will set up to park the bus. Ross rampages on the counter...he seems to run out of ideas when faced with a packed opposition box.

Maybe he'll add that to his game, but it seems to be his glaring weakness right now.

Couldn't agree more. Against the park the bus lot, we need a Tadic who will pick out the runs with outrageous through balls.

What ever happened to martinez telling the lad to play with freedom? He's been ushered out onto the left where he looks poor. RM is stifling his and roms development this season imo with how he has been playing them out of position/ not to their strengths

Tbf he did well against Villa on his return from injury and they use those tactics. But it is one of the few times I can recall him being able to break a packed defence down.

Well, Villa are also massively gash and were in the middle of a horrendous run of form.

I don't think he'd have a problem breaking down defenses in the Championship either. He has ridiculous potential and power and pace and skill...but he's not shown much creativity with his passing and vision.

Only game he wasn't shoved out wide

In their previous game it took City far longer to break Villa down and that was with the creative talents of Silva and Aguero, don't think they are quite the pushover that that run suggested.

He's improved on both his passing and vision from this time last year but agree he'll need to continue that progression if he wants to be a top player.

We'll have him at Sunderland if you's don't want him

Give your head a shake it'll take the lad time to get up to speed

Never said that. He'll be ace. But he has a particular flaw in that he seems to run a little short on ideas when facing a packed penalty area. He's only 20, so I expect it to get ironed out at some point, but if I were a more impatient man I'd want us to be looking to bring in a creative passing type in January to rotate him with.
