Ross Barkley

LOL at people who pick Barkley irrespective of the form of Naismith thinking they're football purists.

........they both have clear quality but RM plays with 2 defensive midfielders who rarely cross the halfway line. In that team model, Barkley is key as he picks the ball up from deep. It's not always just about form, it's about team shape and balance. When everybody is fit RM will have a decision to make but that's why managers are paid big bucks.

True enough and I agree with you that Barkley is better for the team. But Naismith warrants his place so far and Barkley has yet to do enough to displace him despite his obvious talents. My objection is that those who'd have Barkley in the team despite Naismiths efforts seem to think they see football better than others.

What did Naismith do against England? A very good quality player still looks good in a weak team playing against good opponents.

When Naismith plays the rest of the team suffers. I'm not a fan of 4-4-2 either. It's a formation that requires the fullbacks to hold otherwise you are too open and fullbacks are our greatest weapon.

No he doesn't. He only can play one position and that's Ross's.

He's done well but sentimentality doesn't win you anything.

It's not Ross' position to just pick up when he feels like it. Offer up the position on a plate to Ross and where does he have to fight for it? Competition is important and Nais is proving stiff competition. Ross should get his chance today to impress, but he shouldn't just be handed the position indefinitely. That's too sentimental the other way.

To be fair, he got most of the attention as he is Scotland's only real danger man, Everton have a bit more so he gets a lot more space and opportunity.
Which is my point. He needs other players around him to take the focus which then allows him to pop up.

I don't think he helps Lukaku's game or Ross's and they're our too biggest threats. Naismith is far better coming off the bench when teams are still adapting to a formation change and his movement.

Fair enough if it was a loss of form but it wasn't. It was an injury and I takes a bit of time and patience to get back from that. It took him a while last season to get back from injury and then we went on a run. Players sometimes need to know they are playing nomatter what.

an option would be to do the 4-3-3 we did against Arsenal last year. That way you get both in without sacrificing team shape etc.

I'm pretty sure that has been sussed out and only works against teams willing to play more than just counter attacking football. It worked pretty well against City last year as well i think. But the teams we are struggling against are those prepared to sacrifice a bit of enterprise and sit and contain us.
