Problem with our fanbase is we care more about the hard working cloggers than true quality.

Short memories barkley was fantastic last season he completely dominated midfields against the likes of man city and arsenal and ran the show in the goodison derby.

He gets slated yet he is on another planet in terms of ability than Naismith, Mirallas is the same- bags of talent but up until this season has been slagged off whilst the likes of jelavic, stracularsi, now Naismith amongst others, got semi cult hero status for being plucky and trying their best

Barkley was certainly fantastic in some games last season, but his contribution in other games was poor. This was to be his big 'breakthrough ' season and unfortunately we will never know if that would have happened because he got injured.Currently, from a team and productive, involved point of view, Naismith gets in the team before him.Abiility matters, but so does a consistent contribution.I reckon Ross needs another season of 'potential' and should be there or thereabouts by then. Hopefully.

Then I guess William Ralph dean was 'plucky' and he did put his body on the line, there is nothing more everton than a footballer like him , nothing but the best

Roberto Martínez has said Ross Barkley has nothing to gain by returning toEngland Under-21s and it would not aid his development to feature in next summer’s European Championship finals.

The national manager, Roy Hodgson, this week raised the possibility of established Premier League players such as Barkley, Jack Wilshere and Luke Shaw featuring for Gareth Southgate’s team in the Czech Republic by conceding that the Under-21s coach would have first pick on England’s eligible players.

Barkley, who turns 21 in December, falls into that category and many view tournament experience as invaluable ahead of England’s likely participation in Euro 2016 in France. Barkley appeared only as an 87th-minute substitute against Scotland during the recent international break but his club manager believes it would be to the midfielder’s detriment to leave the senior England squad.

“We need to remember what the reason is for playing for the Under-21s – it is to get you ready to play for the first team,” the Everton manager said. “The moment that you feel ready to play in the first team, I don’t see how it can help going back in your development. There are specific moments, and specific players, that can get that advantage but Ross has gone past that completely.

“When I see a young player who has already had his time with the Under-21s I don’t see the point in going back unless there is a specific reason. I don’t think it’s positive for the other players. If you have a group who have qualified, and it’s not easy to qualify, you must have a group that has something going on. You want to use them. “Maybe you have an important player and he gets injured, well then you use Ross Barkley or Jack Wilshere. But there has to be a specific reason. Who is going to guarantee you that by bringing in new faces you are going to win the tournament? Nobody.”

Barkley has made only five appearances for Everton since damaging knee ligaments on the eve of the campaign and, for all the unhelpful Paul Gascoigne comparisons from the England manager, Roy Hodgson, remains a work in progress. The 20-year-old said he wanted more games in central midfield this season but that opportunity is unlikely against West Ham despite injury concerns over McCarthy, Gareth Barry and Darron Gibson.

Martínez said: “I want Ross to play that position eventually but ‘eventually’ is maybe 100 games in the Premier League. The role is different. You need to reduce what you do on the ball and put in more work off the ball. The outstanding quality of Ross is the way he makes that transition as soon as he wins the ball, the way he attacks players and drives at space. It would be a shame to lose that and a big loss to restrict what Ross gives you naturally as a raw talent.”
