Ross Barkley

I dont really get why he didnt play, but Hodgson obviously rates him -

Roy Hodgson believes Ross Barkley has the type of pace and power which reminds him of England great Paul Gascoigne.
Everton midfielder Barkley has missed the past four internationals but has been named in the national squad for the upcoming games against Slovenia and Scotland.
The 20-year-old was part of England’s World Cup squad in the summer after an excellent season with the Toffees but Hodgson left him out of the first two games and criticised the player for giving the ball away too much.
But Hodgson must have been impressed with Barkley's play since because he sees flashes of Gascoigne in the young Liverpudlian.
"He's got great potential as an impact player," the England manager said.
"He's a magnificent runner with the ball. In terms of being able to run with the ball with pace and power, you could compare him to Paul Gascoigne.
"Gascoigne was a powerful player, powerful runner with the ball, once he set off and went by people they didn't catch him. Ross Barkley is the same.
"He's a player with excellent technique and can score goals, he interprets the role behind the front player very well."
Being likened to one of the most entertaining and gifted midfielders of all time is likely to give Barkley a lift.
But it could also backfire, Hodgson admits.
"That was dangerous because now you will make all sorts of comparisons," the England manager said with a smile.
"I might be regretful that I ever mentioned Gascoigne's name, but I will put my cards on the table.
"If you are an England player it means you are going to be under a lot more scrutiny."
Everton manager Roberto Martinez wants Hodgson to be careful with his star midfielder because he has missed the past 14 weeks with a knee injury.
It is unlikely that Barkley will play the entirety of next Saturday's qualifier against Slovenia, or the friendly in Scotland three days later.
"Obviously we lost him through a long period of time through injury," Hodgson said.
"We are pleased to have him back, he does give us that enormous possibility, and if he doesn't start the game he is a player coming off the bench who can make a difference."

I think Barkley is probably the player that will least enjoy playing for Hodgson just because of the brand of football his teams play. England are quite negative under him, whereas Ross is always going to want to take risks.

I couldnt care less anyway as an Evertonian - I think he will start against West Ham and tear them a new one.

No thanks mate, I'd rather him and Stones stayed back and had a good few weeks off so that they can perform for the club that loves them rather than sitting on the bench for the country that doesn't appreciate them.

I think he would play for Southgate's U21 especially given the politics of bringing a full international.

I said at the time we gave players time off during pre-season and it still stands. Most players go through a period where they're injured during a season which gives them the time off from a physical point of view. There's plenty of time left over for a week or two in Ibiza with his mates. It's a short career and playing these tournaments and having a good chance of winning it would be invaluable. It would benefit him and ultimately us.

Well, Bobby's supposed to be a man who looks very seriously at all his statistics and these look pretty convincing.

Hopefully it was just a case of easing him in but somehow I suspect it's because of Naismith's form. Which was the reason early on I was so hesitant to praise him. I just knew it could prove to be the opposite of a blessing in disguise.

I didn't see woy bollocking Milner on the various occaisions he lost the ball.

It's not that he lost the ball it's the decision he made. He tried to turn his man far too deep and far too riskily, it's something he does a lot and probably something he's been told not to do.

The issue is him coming deep. With us we have 2 screening midfielders and I'm sure Roberto has told Ross to get the ball where he can hurt the opposition. When you only get 5 minutes to impress you go looking for the ball in the wrong areas and that can get you into trouble. Hodgson needs to be careful though, it's alright to like workhorses, but flair players are what win you matches.

It is so depressing to see what Hodgson is doing with England. There is just no ambition or foresight to do any more than qualify any more. We already know the likes of Downing and Milner are very very average players, who have repeatedly proven that at the WC and the Euros. I agree that if you want to win a match now, against below average opposition (Scotland etc), you choose these players as they have a bit of experience. The thing is, it is not the players that can do a job now, in a worthless friendly, it is all about the cups. We know Downing and Milner are average, and not getting any better so why not give Ross the game time. He, along with Sterling and Wiltshire, have the ability to drag England away from mediocrity but they need time to play together.
I guess you can argue that on form, they should be picked over Ross, but if you are doing that you have to be consistent. You cant pick Downing and Milner because they are on form, and then still pick Henderson, Lambert and Smalling.
Its all so biased, mediocre and painful to watch.

'on form' Barkley doesn't even get into the Everton team ahead of Naismith and others, based on contribution and productivity. Sorry, but the fact is he has catching up to do at Everton and catching up to do with England. He is still developing, obviously, but it seems that supporters want him to be the finished article now, and this simply isn't the case. The moaning on here when pundits or Martinez or Hodgson don't treat him like the saviour of humanity is mind blowing. Ross has POTENTIAL...he should be getting to the next level soon, or he could be left behind. Its not his fault, he's had injuries which have held him back, but he is behind Wiltshire and others in the England set up, and not guaranteed a start with Everton.I know we would love him to be a world super star, but thats a long way from a given.

Maybe I'm misremembering but didn't be just trod on the ball with no one even close. It didn't seem like a decision issue just a really embarrassing balls up which he's definitely prone to.

I agree that he has a long way to go to reach his potential, but he needs matches. It might seem a little unfair but I'd rather give him those matches and hope that he reaches that potential than play other average players who have already reached theirs, even if it jeopodises our league position. The truth is that he has a frightening ability, the most exciting I have ever seen, but he still has so much to learn. If he develops well, he has the potential to take us to the next level.

Realistically when on form he should be starting in the No10 position with Sterling right and Rooney and Welbeck or Sturridge as CF. I'm not too sure who should start left but Delph gets my vote when fit.

Wilshire is easily first choice at the base of the diamond and one of the first names on the team sheet.

That's just me but I agree on current form he's not justifying his inclusion.
