Roy Hodgson has promised he will allow Gareth Southgate to remove players from the England team for the Under-21 European Championship next summer in a calculated gamble that is likely to involve at least four players from the senior squad dropping to the younger level.

That differs from what Hodgson has said in the past about being against senior internationals reverting to the younger level, and that it would be unfair on the Under-21s who have reached the tournament to lose their place as a result. To that effect, it is understood that Wilshere and Jones are not prominent in Southgate’s thinking. Hodgson privately has reservations about Sterling and Barkley’s inclusion and it would be politically difficult for Southgate to pick them in his squad despite Hodgson’s comments.
...
The England manager also explained why he had restricted Barkley to only three minutes of the last two games. “Barkley has just come back from a long injury. He is an outstanding talent and a part of our thoughts going forward but I think he, like Theo Walcott, needs a few more [club] games to help him.”

Barkley has wonderful natural gifts very few other players possess, namely the pace, strength, and movement he displays with the ball at his feet. There are only a handful of players across Europe capable at carrying the ball over distance like he can.

That's a talent that should be celebrated, but it doesn't mask his limitations: some rudimentary aspects of his game haven't been developed yet, including his positional sense and decision making. There's also more difficult skills that need to be improved if he's going to be the player we hope, such as the quality of his final ball.

That's where he's at right now: a 20 year-old with extremely rare talents, but one who's football education is far from over - especially considering a few injuries that have hampered his development. If he stays clear of serious injury and has two full seasons of regular starts we will hopefully see an outstanding all-round footballer, which is why any move to City/Chelsea in the short term would be a big mistake. He's at the ideal club to fulfil his potential.
A brilliant post. Assessment and analysis is spot on. The one problem I would add is that the boy seems to lack 'football intelligence', meaning he makes the wrong decision quite often. Is this the sort of thing you can instill into someone or will it always be something that prevents his full development?

Agree that he makes the wrong decision a lot of the time but I don't believe this means he lacks football intelligence. I just think that as he gets older and gets more experience his decision making will improve. At the minute he seems to shoot when he should pass or pass when he should shoot or pick the wrong pass a lot of the time but I think that's common in young players, deulofeo is in the same boat, they both have the talent it's just learning when to do what in certain situations

*JARG MATE OF A MATE STORY WARNING*

Cockney work mate, has a mate who is mates with a Barber who does Sterlings hair, so has now started doing a few of the England squads.

With him being a Libpool fan, asked if Ross will go to them, he said no and his prefered destination is Arsenal.

SELL HIM NOW !!!

Arsenal? They're the least attractive "elite" team in Europe

The same complaints of Walcott where made and he's improved greatly however in my opinion like Walcott it will always be a relative weakness.

I also think trying to turn him into something he's not isn't going to get the best out of him. You could argue Rooney is an all-round better player now but I would still take the fearless 18 year old any time.

Personally I think that what made the difference between him and Ronaldo. Ronaldo never lost the arrogance, the fearlessness to keep trying things, the spark. In time his all round game improved anyway just from playing
