Ross Barkley

just a shocking indictment of moyes youth policy if true

......Moyes was always clear that Premiership points were precious. That was his philosophy. Barkley made a few mistakes and got caught in possession when he came in and this clearly influenced Moyes and informed the steer he gave Warnock. I watched Barkley in a few England youth games and he was defensively poor, when playing wide opposing full backs went past him and then away from him with ease.

RM saw beyond all that. His arrival was brilliant timing for Barkley because he might have been at a crossroads. I wouldn't criticise Moyes so much as I'm sure other Managers might have felt the same. I would, however, heap huge praise on Martinez for seeing that the talent could be harnessed to great affect at the top level. I've said it before, RM and RB are a perfect storm.

oh right so Downing plays well all season, assisting and scoring for WHU and Barkley comes back from injury, doesn't really do anything and plays, Don't people have a problem with Lambert getting into the england squad having hardly played this season Yet Ross should walk straight into the team despite not really having one good game yet this season? thats the fair way to do it isnt it.
Don't think Ross should have walked straight back into the England team just after returning from injury any more than Walcott should have or Carrick although those players at least have a longer history in the team. It is just there is so much fuss made when someone is "dropped" that there is a pressure to include them before they are back up to full fitness/form.

Unless there is a dearth of players due to an injury crisis (like there was a CB this time) would personally only include players who are doing well and starting regularly for their clubs. Only exception would be the captain and even then would prefer it if they only played in the team when on form.

One of the most frustrating things about Roy yelling at Ross was that it was very predictable that when Barkley first came on as a sub he would have several bad touches to get up to speed. He almost always does for us as well, Burnley being the most recent example where he spent the first five minutes giving the ball away. After that he was fine but as a manager it is something you should be aware of and factor into when/if you bring on a player - bringing him on that late he was almost guaranteed to get all the downsides as he adapted and none of the benefit after he had.

It is not as noticeable if he starts the game or comes on at half time, not sure if it is mental or physical. Hopefully it is something Ross works on and improves but can't see that screaming your head off at him is going to help that.

I've heard too many things about moyes faith in youth to think otherwise, it was clear to the staff he didn't trust them and I'm sure that transferred to the players as well

Quite. It was inevitable and, as you say, is a curiosity of Barkley's game coming on from the bench. It had the unfortunate effect of proving Hodgeson right, to himself at least.

...I think he also felt he had to select the bigger earners. Strange that our performances probably suffered most when DM had a full squad to pick from, we always seemed best when he had to make best use of limited resource.

But we all said this when Moyes was here, doing these things with Ross.

Its was clear, that he needed to play further up the field, many on here said it, It was obvious.

.....that 1st game away to Arsenal was the first glimmer of brilliance for me. As you say, he was playing further up the pitch behind the striker. He was very good that night. Well done to you and others with foresight ahead of that appearance. I have to admit to not being amongst that group. He is a proper talent.
