I went to the game tonight. Ross came on at half time and did very little in a very poor Sheff Weds side totally outplayed by Brighton.
Ross played just behind Jay Bothroyd and was often frustrated as he saw very little of the ball so he came deeper to try and pick it up and influence things. His touch was ok and he dropped little short passes into his team mates but did little to improve his side in the half.
I tnink behind the striker is where he should play and where he can offer most to Sheffield Weds i.e. his creativity but you've spotted his weakness: lanquid movement. He needs to really sharpen up his game around the edge of the box to succeed at this level, and up it agian for the Premiership. If he can add sharp one-two's to his game and get some shots away then he will come back a much better player. Not saying that he can't do those thing it's just that he doesn't, same for using his left foot a bit more. Suspect that life has been a bit too easy for him in youth football and he needs to develop quickly if he's to grow into the player he could be.
One thing I noticed was that he didn't often come towards the ball and so often found the ball intercepted. This could be something he will improve a bit more with age but it's something he needs to work on as is his workrate when he doesn't have the ball
Well all these things he's saying he wasnt doing for Wednesday he was doing for the England youths this summer!. That just proves the one thing you did say was right is that at youth level, he's got it easy cos he's a class above!.
This is why he's gone out on loan, to try and emulate what he does at youth level in the big mans game. This stint is whats going to try and bring him on, up his confidence to try and play the way he does so freely at youth levels, cos he as got it in his locker to play the give and goes, the movement, eye for a pass with both feet and get a goal!.
Us Evertonians have seen in flashes last season what he can do, being at Sheff Wed is still a step up for him even in a league below and it will do him the world of good, wether he does well or not?!.
He'll definitely learn from this experience and it might not only be the loan move he as in his career at Everton?!.
