Keeper goes the other way and its a good pen. One of them things really.

Why tho is Baines not taking pens these days? It's like liverpool or chelsea back in the day not using Gerrard or lampard for pens. Crazy...only at everton!
Maybe he just doesn't want to take them anymore, I'm sure i read somewhere that he thought the goalies had sussed him out.

As much as I like Baines I can't help but think slightly less of him if his confidence has been knocked this much from 1 penno being saved. He shouldn't be on pens if he isn't confident but the best pen takers have all missed one or two or more, have all had close shaves, and it doesn't stop them stepping up for the next one

Can't help but wonder what sort of player he'd be if he was more assertive and confident, if this is anything to go on

The ability to score goals?
Something Lampard developed as part of his football intelligence, you could make a case for a natural ability to time his runs and his appreciation of space, and he always did it, so yeah, i'll give you that one, but in terms of natural ability ross is leagues ahead, whether that will be matched by his development the way Lampard worked and developed his game is unknown and maybe even unlikely, but he has more natural ability than lampard did

The ability to score goals?
In his first full year of senior football Lampard scored 5 goals, Ross scored 6.

In their second year Lampard scored 5 and Ross has to date scored 2.

Lampard slightly better but Ross has had to deal with a leg break and this season an MCL injury, both of which have probably hindered his development.

Hard to tell how Ross will end up but he has the talent.

Hmm, well that's fairly hopeful then.

One thing that stat shows is that talk of 'natural ability' is overhyped. Lampard didn't bang them in as soon as he stepped on the pitch.

Fantastic footballers work fantastically hard. I do think people can have a biological advantage but it's worthless without work and the right environment. Athleticism comes naturally, success doesn't.

Hopefully Ross can be nurtured in the best possible way because he certainly has the physique. As you say, I think that double leg break and MCL are about as harsh as it gets. I think we really overlook how damaging that has been to his development, which is really a credit to Ross' ability.

Admit I was surprised myself when I looked at the data (here btw http://m.premierleague.com/en-gb/players/playerprofile.html/frank-lampard ) that it took until Lampard's 7th year and a move to Chelsea before he scored in double figures. Although as @toffeejack says, Lampard is probably a bad comparison as his strengths/weaknesses are also the complete opposite of Ross.

Agree that sometimes people underestimate quite how hard it is to reach the top of the profession, tbh I thought Ronaldo was a bit of a showpony but the reason why he has reached where he has is not just his natural talent but hours in the gym and on the practice ground improving his skills.
