Ross Barkley

It's clear to see his talent, but unfortunately he's never going to get the time he needs in the premier league.

He can still make the passes and shots in the prem, its his work rate and willingness to defend (lack of) which is his problem. Pienaar needs to have a word with him.

I really wish I didn't agree with this. Off the ball he's shocking.

I don't think he's that bad. He's hardly the hardest worker in the world but not every player has to be if you're good enough with the ball.

Certainly didn't seem to be standing around with his hands on his hips tonight and Wednesday didn't seem overrun in midfield because of any slacking on his part.

Everton fans on twitter saying they doubt he will ever make it and that he is not going to be up to PL standard. Im not saying we have the next Zidane in our midst but to right a lad of at 18 on the back of a double leg break playing in a absoloute battle of a derby when the ball is being played from back to front completely missing out the midfield and yet he still looked the most composed player on the pitch, at 18 IS REALLY fuc*in annoying

Thats mainly down to the way Wednesday line up, he appeared to be playing in the hole behind the striker at times, fairly sure its not his job to be defensive, but he looks really lazy defensively for an 18 Year old to me.

Would have thought somebody his age would have bags of energy or at least show willingness to throw a tackle in.

Anyway, I can see why he gets nowhere near the Everton first team, based on the 70minutes I watched of him.

Early doors yet tho, at some point maybe he will realise theres 2 sides to playing in midfield.

The thing is he doesn't seem to track back/work hard from the 1st minute.. So can't be getting tired and then stopping.

What also confuses me is the fact it looks obvious to us fans. It's also something moyes is a hitler about... So surely someone (moyes) would of said u need to work harder Ross lad? At which point u'd expect to see a improvement on that front but he's looked the same since day one!?!?

And if nobody is on at him to work his ass off more there must be a reason?

It seemed more, do something boss, admire it, jog about. But he's still learning his positional play both forward and back.

Defensive game needs a lot of work. That's not just tackling etc but mainly strength and work rate.

Just got to keep in mind that the premiership is a step up in pace and aggression. He's not ready to start and should stay there for the rest of the season Imo

I dunno if I can go along with that. He's a fantastic talent, but he's bone idle lazy. There were many a time where he could have run forward but was just lack-luster walking around the pitch leaving attacking players stranded up field.

I'm not sure what goes through his head, but if he's not putting the work in one thing is for sure, he's not helping the team and he's missing opportunities to attack.

He's got a long way to go for sure, but I hope he makes it. If he doesn't, he'll only have himself to blame.

He definitely has talent and the ability to use the ball. But every time I see him he seems to have got bigger, height wise and with his weight. He is probably 6 2 now and over 11 and a half stone. I still think he is growing and suffers from some of the problems associated with 'growing pains'. This can cause problems with fatigue and it comes across as being lazy. At times tonight he was trying to get back but he was running like he was stuck in mud. Let's see what he is like when he has stopped growing and can work on his fitness a bit more. He could be used as an impact sub at the moment.

Hes a premiership player in terms of the technical side, vision, composure, skill etc.

But like people have mentioned, there's no hustle and bustle about him, sharpness in jockying, tracking. That burst of energy to snap and heels etc.

What you don't want is him turning into a Arshavin or Taarabt etc.

I watched a different game apparently, or you're all so brainwashed by the "defend at all cost" Moyes mentality that you've forgotten what a decent attacking midfielder looks like.

Zidane barely threw a tackle, so by the logic applied in this thread he'd never get a game at Everton!

He's 18, looked for the ball all night long, distributed it well in the main, a bit of loose play, tired towards the last 15 minutes but was comfortably the most technically gifted player on the pitch.

As for "off the ball movement", he was leagues ahead of everyone around him. Shocked at some of the analysis on here. He drifted into space effortlessly. I can only hope you meant tracking back when you say "off the ball movement", otherwise... pffft... some strange footballing views on show.

He's not a defensive player, who cares - he's a creative attacking midfielder, also known as a trequartista. He'd be playing in a five man midfield anyway and used as the most advanced of the three in the middle, he doesn't need to track back - he needs to support a striker and act as a pivot for the side going forward.

Having said all this... Zidane one of the best players to grace a football pitch didn't exactly bust a gut around a football pitch!

lol snap!!!

I do remember him putting one tackle in near the touchline lol.

Of course every player in a team, espeically midfield have to work to a certain standard. And Everton that standard is higher than most clubs, which is fine but if you have a player like Ross who has tonnes of natural talent but little work ethic whats best?

Improve his workrate but lose his talent, or encourage his talent but don't improve his workrate? I'll say now that i think we could afford a player like him in our team because the workrate of all the other players would cover for him.

But i know thats not how things work under Moyes. It will be a huge shame if we're too obsessed with getting him working harder but can't find the decent middle ground and instead lose his talent.

Time will tell though, he's got years before its too late for him.
