I watched a different game apparently, or you're all so brainwashed by the "defend at all cost" Moyes mentality that you've forgotten what a decent attacking midfielder looks like.

Zidane barely threw a tackle, so by the logic applied in this thread he'd never get a game at Everton!

He's 18, looked for the ball all night long, distributed it well in the main, a bit of loose play, tired towards the last 15 minutes but was comfortably the most technically gifted player on the pitch.

As for "off the ball movement", he was leagues ahead of everyone around him. Shocked at some of the analysis on here. He drifted into space effortlessly. I can only hope you meant tracking back when you say "off the ball movement", otherwise... pffft... some strange footballing views on show.

He's not a defensive player, who cares - he's a creative attacking midfielder, also known as a trequartista. He'd be playing in a five man midfield anyway and used as the most advanced of the three in the middle, he doesn't need to track back - he needs to support a striker and act as a pivot for the side going forward.

lol snap!!!

Compare his work rate to Wilshire for eg. He needs to get to that level.

It's not about tackling etc, it's just about closing down, tracking players etc. The Barca players all have that, the arsenal midfield have it, etc.

I was impressed, he still runs like a duck and looks a little leggy when Wednesday don't have the ball but he's in a different League whenever he receives it, and as a play-maker, that's what I'm looking for. He's never going to great defensively but for me, he's that good footballer that it won't matter all that much. He's certainly won't be the first successful no10 who's not up to much when he doesn't have the ball.

His footwork and range of skills give him so many options positionally. He could easily cut inside from one of the flanks or play off the front. He's been touted as a box to box midfielder and his size and physique gives you the impression that he should be one, but the style is total football.

Another month's loan would be good and then I'd be looking to bring him back.

LOL

Comparing him to Zidane, utterly priceless.

They play the same position and role in a side, that's where the comparison ends.

Not every player has to run around like a headless chicken for 90 minutes. In fact I'd be more alarmed if he was as that would indicate he's sacrificing his superior technique for a generic midfielder role.

He's a playmaker and all he should be doing is drifting into space. In terms of tracking back, all he has to do is jog back and fill a space, which he did.

Finally a proper footballing opinion!

Didn't watch him tonight but... if people are talking about him as a luxury player/playmaker then I would be expecting more of an end product. You can get away with being that kind of player if you consistently create and score goals. Otherwise you're just not pulling your weight.

I want him to succeed as much as anyone but it sounds like he won't be ready for the premiership for a while yet.

look weve build players up in the hope of finding a new rooney to worship./ Tried it with Baxter, he's now at Oldham, now Barkley who will play at a higher level than jose but i dont believe for a club like us.

Yeah, this is where he need to step up and make things happen but he still a kid and still believe he got a chance to make it into a key player for us.

Inesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Silva, Arteta, Carzola, Mata, etc etc are all creative players but all have high work rates who don't just "drop into space and that's it" they hustle without the ball.

Even Ozil does this. He's horizontal most of the time he's that laid back, but will close down and win the ball back when needed.

Just a few examples. Just because a player is creative they're not removed from defensive responsibilities and work rate. The ones that do are either on another planet technically... Or never make it at a high level.

He almost reminded me of an early Matt Le Tissier tonight. He was lazy.

His pure ability on the ball intrigues me, but if he can't work on the defensive side of his game then he will never be a top class player, aggression is a trait the likes of Gerrard, Rooney and Zidane all have and Ross is lacking that atm, if he gets that then I think he will be THE best English player there is for a long time, ahead of Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rooney.
