Ross Barkley

Why do people keep saying he's "obviously talented"? I've watched nearly all his senior minutes (only on stream, mind) and haven't seen anything that makes me think he'll be the next Rodwell.

He gives the ball away regularly, tries tricks which don't come off and loses positioning when the team lose the ball.

On the plus side, he wants the ball and he seems to have a good eye for a through pass.

I agree he needs more game-time if he's ever gonna be a useful squad player, but to secure more game-time he's got to convince in the little time he gets on the pitch. He's not doing that.

Vellios has done more to warrant more game-time, even doing well when asked to play unconventionally on the wing.

Good luck to Ross, I know how much we really want a local lad to do good again, especially after losing the last two to the monied Manchester clubs. Hopefully he can tighten his game up for next season.

I should hope not. Why would we want injury prone crab Mk.II ?

Disagree with most of that.

Rodwell was bog standard, did the easy things well. Barkleys potential is much better than Rodwells IMO.

But started for us regularly when fit, and seems to get games at city when fit also?

Of course Barkleys potential as a creative player is better. But hes nowhere near ready for the first team mainly because he can't do the easy things well and can't be relied on at the moment.

Rodwell was 1st team material at 19 despite being an "average" Joe.

Can see where you're coming from with Rodwell but overall he was a disappointment. Partialy because of our expectations of him. We seen a young lad come in and playing well but still learning yet he didn't improve as we expected him to. When you look at it in the cold day of light you see a player who was potentially great but didn't realise that potential and turned into an average (or as Stend said 'Bog Std') player. He may or may not do it at City but one thing for sure is he has not improved one jot since his early games at Everton.

Barkley is in the same boat at the moment. We seen the class he had when he started in the first team yet he hasn't bettered that up to this point. Could be he is not quite ready or he hasn't been given enough game time. We have to be patient with him and if he gives the ball away or tries a trick that doesn't come off then we have to look at the surrounding players and see he is no different in that respect.

Good post. All players can lose the ball, Osman, pienaar, jelevic all lose the ball in every game they play, even baines can give the ball away. Barkley is not getting enough game time to be judged yet. His ball to coleman was sublime, not all of our players can pull a ball off like that.

Rodwell stalled here for the role he was given. The last few games for City (before yet another injury) he looked very impressive in an attacking sense. Something he hardly did for us.

However his injuries are worrying.

I don't know where Barkley would fit in the side at the moment. He should be Osman' s understudy and taking the work load from him. But thats not happened. May happen next season, but Osman is gonna be ahead of him for a few more seasons imo.

Thats what we get under Moyes. Different games = different roles for a lot of players. Thats his style at Everton but it may be forced upon because of his meagre budget. He buys Stones as a right back but is already talking about him as a centre half. Lescotts first few matches at left back. Jags everywhere, hietinga at right back, centre back and midfield, Neville.........well you get my drift. Maybe this was the problem with Rodwell.

.....244 pages and counting on a player who is yet to demonstrate that he is good enough to start. Sincerely hope I'm proven wrong, but seeing is believing and I'm not seeing!!

Good idea, we can demonstrate against Moyes to let Barkley demonstrate he is good enough to start. The problem is he is not being given enough game time to be able to prove or disprove. He needs a run out whilst other players like Osman are flagging then we can be better able to judge for ourselves.

He tried a silly trick that didn't come off on the wide left, but he moved into space really well and fizzed a fantastic cross field pass for Coleman.

He gave the ball away once or twice, but every player on the pitch did. It was amusing watching the game with my dad - he groaned when Ross lost the ball and completely ignored Osman and Anichebe doing the same thing 20 seconds either side of Barkley.

People are definitely over-analysing him and seemingly wanting him to screw up. He's not match fit as he's not playing matches and he's probably a nervous wreck after his poor handling over the past two years.

All that considered, he's still showing all the signs to suggest he's going to be a top, top player. As I've said often, he needs a run of games and he needs to feel part of the first team squad. The problem is that he's had two years of wasted development under Moyes.

Nope.

Rodwells progression was also down to squad at the time. This season Moyes has had enough body's that he hasn't had to use youth. Nothing to do with ability in my opinion just his preference.
