Rooney at 20 was doing a lot of things better than Barkley, let's not get carried away here. Barkley is fantastic but Rooney was more consistent, aware and aggressive.

Rooney at 20 was doing a lot of things better than Barkley, let's not get carried away here. Barkley is fantastic but Rooney was more consistent, aware and aggressive.

At 20 Rooney had played 3 full season at this level, this is Ross' first, plus he was in a top, top United team.

rooney's going to become the top goalscorer ever for the most successful team in england, will take something to be thrice the player.

barkley's just amazing though, he's that type of fearless player you have to play at this level regardless of age. hodgson won't do it, he'll go for safer players. he's given so many players chances in an england shirt and should be credited with that and picked a lot of youngsters in the 30 man squad. but england aren't going to get out of the group if he sticks with the "safer" options like gerrard, lampard, welbeck, milner etc.

think he needs to pick a team in preparation for the next WC and fill it with youth.

i doubt the other top nations would be hesitant to throw a player like barkley into the deep end, england always seem a tad guilty of being too cautious. barkley could have the same impact that owen and rooney did in their first tournament i.e. the only silver lining. if he goes with a few youngsters, there could be a few silver linings.
